Read the Optics ComparisonOpticsAutofocus coverage favours the Sony a9 II, with 693 points against 225 on the Leica SL2-S, for more freedom over focus placement with a moving subject. Its 1/32000 second maximum exposure, against 1/16000 on the Leica, helps freeze fast motion at wide apertures. The mounts differ, Leica L against Sony FE, so each draws on its own lens system. The Leica answers with a much sharper electronic viewfinder, 5.76 million dots against 3.69 million, for easier judgement of fine focus. Resolution differs only slightly, 24.6 MP against 24.2 MP, so neither has a meaningful edge for heavy cropping. Both use full-frame CMOS sensors, shoot at up to 20 fps, and have in-body stabilisation for steadier handheld work.

Read the Video ComparisonVideoThe Leica SL2-S is the stronger choice for slow motion, with a maximum video frame rate of 60 fps against 30 fps on the Sony a9 II. Capturing at the higher rate lets you halve the playback speed of fast action. Both top out at 4K resolution, so the split is motion flexibility rather than detail. Both cameras offer built-in timelapse recording, so interval shooting needs no external intervalometer. File formats differ, MPEG-4 on the Leica and XAVC S or AVCHD on the Sony, which mainly shapes the editing workflow.

Read the Features ComparisonFeaturesA flip screen gives the Sony a9 II easier low-angle and overhead framing, while the SL2-S screen is fixed. The Leica answers with a finer, larger rear display, 2.1 million dots at 3.2 inches against 1.44 million at 3 inches, for clearer checking of captured detail. Both bodies have weather sealing, touch control, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for wireless transfer and remote control, and support for external flash. Neither includes GPS, so geotagging your locations needs another route.

Read the Storage & battery ComparisonStorage and BatteryBattery ratings favour the Sony a9 II, at 690 shots against 510 for the SL2-S. Its card slots support UHS-II SD cards for faster writing during long bursts, while both have dual slots for separating files or overflow. Both cameras charge over USB, which simplifies topping up from a laptop or power bank between shoots. Each uses its own battery type, BP-SCL4 in the Leica and NP-FZ100 in the Sony, so spares are not interchangeable.

Verdict
Choose the Leica SL2-S if video matters to your work, since its 60 fps maximum video frame rate gives twice the slow-motion room of the Sony's 30 fps. Its sharper rear screen and much sharper viewfinder also make reviewing and composing more comfortable.
Choose the Sony a9 II for a lighter sports and action kit. Its 693 autofocus points, 1/32000 second maximum shutter, higher battery rating and UHS-II card support suit a long day of fast shooting. With resolution, burst speed and stabilisation closely matched, the split is video flexibility against portability and endurance.
