Optics

The SL2 is the stronger choice for landscape prints, studio work and heavy crops of distant subjects. Its 47 megapixel sensor carries 22.4 more megapixels than the 24.6 megapixel sensor in the SL2-S, leaving far more room to crop a distant animal and still print large. Both share the Leica L mount and CMOS full frame sensors, so the same lenses fit either body, and both offer in-body stabilisation.

The SL2-S offers more exposure control at both ends. Its native ISO range spans 50 to 100000 ISO, against 100 to 50000 on the SL2. It starts lower for long daylight exposures and doubles the ceiling available in very dark scenes. Its 1/16000 second top shutter is twice as fast as the SL2's 1/8000 second, helping hold wide apertures in bright light.

Video

The SL2 is the stronger choice for slow motion. Its maximum video frame rate of 120 fps, against 60 fps on the SL2-S, gives editors more room to slow fast action in post. Resolution is a shared limit, as both record up to 4K and offer built-in timelapse. The SL2 also records in MPEG-4, MOV and H.264, against MPEG-4 on the SL2-S, widening editing choices.

Features

Wireless workflow is a shared strength, as both cameras offer WiFi and Bluetooth for image transfer and remote control from a phone. Both carry weather-sealed bodies, 3.2-inch touchscreens with 2.1 million dots, and support for external flash units, while neither has a built-in flash. Neither offers a flip screen or GPS, so travel shooters who want geotagged files need another way to record location data.

Storage and Battery

The SL2-S is the endurance pick. Its BP-SCL4 battery is rated for 510 shots against 370 for the SL2, a 140-shot lead, and it supports USB charging for topping up between locations. The SL2 has no USB charging. Both use the same BP-SCL4 pack, and dual card slots on both add spare storage on a long shoot.

Card speed favours the SL2 for high-resolution work. Its slots accept UHS-II compatible SD, SDHC and SDXC cards, which helps when 47 megapixel files stack up quickly. The SL2-S supports SD, SDHC and SDXC cards.

Verdict

Choose the Leica SL2 when resolution drives the work. Landscape prints, studio product photography and cropping distant wildlife all benefit from its 47 megapixels. Its UHS-II card support keeps large files moving during fast sequences, and its 120 fps maximum video frame rate adds slow-motion headroom for filmmakers.

Choose the Leica SL2-S for longer, more varied shooting days. Its 510-shot rated battery, USB charging, 1/16000 second shutter and 100000 ISO ceiling suit travel, street and mixed-light work where a quick top-up matters more than crop room. Both share the L mount, stabilisation and wireless features, so the decision rests on resolution against endurance and convenience.
