Optics

The D3100 is the stronger choice for heavy cropping, with 14.8 megapixels against the D2Xs's 12.2. The D2Xs answers for speed, shooting at 8 fps where the D3100 reaches 3 fps. Its 1/8000 maximum shutter speed also allows a shorter exposure than the D3100's 1/4000 for freezing fast subjects in bright light. The D3100 offers a wider ISO range, reaching 3200 natively against 800, with expansions to 12800 versus 3200.

Several optics specifications match: both use an APS-C CMOS sensor, offer 11 autofocus points and omit in-body stabilisation, so handheld shooting in low light relies on the lens either way. Both viewfinders are optical, though the D2Xs uses a pentaprism and the D3100 a pentamirror.

Video

Neither camera records video; both are stills-only DSLRs. The only difference here is timelapse: the D2Xs has built-in timelapse support for capturing a changing scene such as drifting clouds as a sequence of frames, while the D3100 does not.

Features

The D3100 makes framing easier with live view, so you can compose shots on its 3-inch LCD when working low to the ground or on a tripod. The D2Xs offers no live view and a smaller 2.5-inch screen. The D3100 also has a built-in flash for quick fill light indoors, which the D2Xs omits.

Across connectivity and protection, neither body has GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth or weather sealing. Neither has a touchscreen or a tilting screen, and both support external flash units.

Storage and Battery

The D3100's EN-EL14 battery is rated for 4500 shots, against a 2000-shot rating for the D2Xs's EN-EL4a, so the D3100 carries the higher rating for a long day of shooting.

Storage formats differ as well: the D2Xs records to Compact Flash Type I or II cards, while the D3100 uses SD, SDHC and SDXC cards. Neither camera has dual card slots or USB charging.

Verdict

For most buyers the D3100 is the better pick: it offers live view, a built-in flash, more resolution for cropping and higher ISO settings for dim interiors. It is also the lighter body to take on holiday. Choose the D2Xs when action photography is the priority, because its 8 fps burst and 1/8000 shutter speed serve sports and birds in flight. Both share the F DX mount, so your lenses keep working either way.
