Read the General ComparisonGeneralThe Pentax K-50 and Sony SLT Alpha 35 are both APS-C DSLRs from different lens systems: the K-50 takes Pentax KAF lenses, the A35 Sony Alpha DT glass. The K-50 is the newer camera, released in 2013 against 2011 for the A35. The A35 is the much lighter body, at 415 g against 650 g. Its 124 x 92 x 85 mm frame is narrower and shorter than the K-50's 130 x 97 x 71 mm, though deeper.

Read the Optics ComparisonOpticsThe K-50 is the stronger body at the extremes of exposure. Its 1/6000 second top shutter gives shorter exposures than the A35's 1/4000 for bright light or wide apertures, and its 6 fps burst runs slightly ahead of the A35's 5.5 fps. Its ISO range reaches 51200, against a native 12800 ceiling on the A35. Pixel counts are nearly the same, 16.28 MP against 16 MP, so neither gives meaningful extra cropping room. The sensors are both APS-C CMOS, and both cameras offer in-body stabilisation for handheld shots with any mounted lens. The A35 has 15 autofocus points against 11, giving more positions for off-centre subjects. Its electronic viewfinder has 1,150,000 dots, against the K-50's optical pentaprism.

Read the Video ComparisonVideoThe Sony SLT Alpha 35 is the better pick for motion work. Its video frame-rate ceiling of 60 fps, double the K-50's 30 fps, suits smooth playback and gives room to slow footage for slow-motion effects. The two share the same maximum video resolution, Full HD, so neither offers 4K. For time-lapse projects such as drifting clouds or a sunset, the K-50 has built-in timelapse, while the A35 does not.

Verdict
Choose the Pentax K-50 if your photography happens outdoors. Weather sealing, the 1/6000 second top shutter, the 6 fps burst and built-in timelapse together suit landscape, wildlife and adventure shooting.
Choose the Sony SLT Alpha 35 for lighter travel and motion work. It is the lighter body at 415 g against 650 g, and its flip screen helps with candid and overhead angles. Its 60 fps frame-rate ceiling supports smooth or slowed playback. Since the mounts differ, the lens system you prefer matters too.
