Canon EOS 90D

The EOS 90D is an APS-C DSLR released in 2019. It uses the Canon EF/EF-S lens mount, so it accepts EF and EF-S lenses, and you compose through an optical pentaprism viewfinder.

That combination suits photographers who want resolution for cropping and printing alongside a burst rate of up to 10 fps for moving subjects. Weather sealing is fitted, and the battery carries a 1,300-shot rating.

It is a substantial body at 701 grams and 141 x 105 x 77 mm. Cards go into a single SD slot, and the LP-E6N battery does not charge over USB.

The 33-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor is the heart of the stills output. That resolution gives room to crop tightly or print large while keeping detail, and the Digic 8 processor is the engine behind the camera's file handling.

For action work, the shutter reaches 1/8000s and the drive runs at up to 10 fps. Together they let you freeze fast movement and pick the best frame from a burst. The top rate is a maximum, not a promise for every scene.

Viewfinder shooting uses a 45-point autofocus system, and the optical pentaprism finder shows the scene directly as it happens. For anyone who prefers that traditional shooting feel, it is a core part of this camera's character.

There is no in-body stabilisation, so steadying a handheld shot depends on your lens or your technique. The ISO range runs from 100 to 25600, which helps keep shutter speeds workable when the light drops.

The 90D records 4K video, with resolution suited to large screens and room to crop in the edit. Files are recorded in MPEG-4 using H.264 compression.

Frame rates go up to 120 fps. Recording at a high rate like that lets you slow fast motion right down in the edit, whether it is a bird taking off or water pouring into a glass.

A built-in timelapse function automates interval shooting. Set the camera on a tripod, choose the interval and let it run, which is far easier than triggering every frame by hand.

The flip-out screen also earns its keep for filming because it supports framing from different angles while the camera records.

The 3-inch LCD is a touchscreen with a 1.04-million-dot panel, and it flips out from the body, so you can compose from ground level or over a crowd. Touch control and live view are both available.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are built in, so the camera can connect wirelessly to other devices.

The body is weather sealed, though sealing is not the same as waterproofing. A built-in flash covers casual indoor shots, and an external flash can be added when you need more power or control.

There is no built-in GPS, so the camera does not record shooting locations by itself. If location data matters to your wildlife or travel work, record it separately.

A single SD slot takes SD, SDHC and SDXC cards, with UHS-II compatibility. There is no second slot, so there is no in-camera backup of a shoot; for one-off events, carry enough capacity that a card problem does not end your day.

The LP-E6N battery is rated at 1,300 shots per charge. That rating is not a promise of real-world endurance, since it does not specify its measurement conditions, and results can vary with how you shoot.

There is no USB charging. On a multi-day trip away from home, a spare battery charged in advance is useful protection against running flat.
