About This LensThis Canon RF zoom covers 24–70mm on full-frame cameras. It suits weddings, events, travel and portraits where people and framing change quickly. The wide end includes more surroundings, while the longer settings let you give a person or detail more of the frame. Canon introduced it in 2019. Its f/2.8 maximum aperture stays available throughout the zoom. The main trade-off is weight. Consider how you will carry the full camera setup during long sessions, especially when a second lens or flash is also needed.

About the BuildThe lens weighs 1 lb 15.7 oz (900 g) and measures 4.95 in (125.7 mm) long and 3.48 in (88.5 mm) across. A rest can take the load during pauses between photographs. Screw-in filters must match the 82mm front thread to attach directly.

About the OpticsAt 24mm, you can include more of a room from one position. At 70mm, one person or table detail becomes larger. How much of a group fits still depends on where you stand. Check the edges for distracting objects before taking the photograph. For a group portrait, leave space around the people at the edges. That gives you room to straighten or crop later without cutting into someone’s hand or shoulder. The maximum aperture remains f/2.8 as you zoom. You can retain that opening when framing changes, although a different part of the scene may need a different exposure. In dim light, f/2.8 gives more room for a faster shutter speed or lower ISO than a smaller opening. At close portrait distances, f/2.8 can give a thin zone of sharp focus. A background far behind the person can become soft. Focus on the eye that matters most, then stop down when more of the face or another person must stay sharp. Closest focus is 0.7 ft (21 cm) at 24mm, measured from the sensor. The minimum distance is longer at 70mm. Maximum magnification reaches 0.30x at an intermediate zoom setting. Leave room ahead of the glass and avoid shading a nearby flower or table detail.

About the FeaturesImage stabilization reduces camera shake for still scenes at slower shutter speeds. It does not stop a person moving through the frame. Keep enough shutter speed for their movement, and use firm support for long exposures or controlled video work. Dust and moisture resistance help outdoors. Use cover in persistent rain. Fluorine coating helps water and oily marks wipe away from the front glass. Remove loose grit before cleaning, especially after working near sand or soil. The zoom lock prevents the barrel extending during transport. Release it before changing focal length.
Weather Sealing ⓘWeather sealing capabilities will give you more confidence when shooting in unfavourable conditions.
Fluorine Coating ⓘCoating to repel water and oil from lens elements.
| Built In Lens Hood | No |

Zoom Lock ⓘZoom lock allows the zoom ring to be locked at the desired focal length
Teleconverter ⓘA teleconverter (extender) is an extra piece of equipment that fits between the lens and the camera body to enhance magnification | No |
| Image Stabilization | Yes |
IS Efficiency ⓘIS efficiency refers to the effectiveness of the image stabilization system in compensating for the blurring effects of camera shake, quantified by the number of stops of stabilization it provides. | 5 stops |

About the ConstructionThree aspherical elements help correct distortion and spherical aberration, which can bend lines or soften detail. Three UD elements help reduce coloured fringes along high-contrast edges, such as a white dress against a dark doorway. Element counts describe the design, rather than proving measured sharpness.
Elements ⓘLens elements refer to individual pieces of glass within the lens. | 21 |
| Groups | 15 |
Aspherical Elements ⓘThe number of aspherical lens elements which can help correct aberrations such as spherical aberration. | 3 |
Bi Aspherical Elements ⓘElements with two non-spherical surfaces | 0 |
Low Dispersion ⓘElements that reduce chromatic aberration | 3 |
Super Low Dispersion ⓘAdvanced elements further reducing chromatic aberration | 0 |
CA Reduction ⓘBuilt-in features to reduce chromatic aberration | 0 |
Internal Focusing ⓘInternal Focusing means that the lens does not change in size during focusing, and the front element does not rotate. | No |
