Fujifilm GFX100S

The GFX100S is Fujifilm's mirrorless medium format camera, released in 2021 and built around the Fujifilm G lens mount. A 102 megapixel sensor puts resolution at the heart of what it does.

It fits photographers whose results depend on fine detail, such as landscape, product and studio work. The 5fps burst rate points toward considered shooting rather than fast-paced action.

Carrying it is a real commitment: the body weighs 900 grams and measures 150 x 104 x 87mm. In return you get in-body stabilisation, weather sealing and twin card slots in a package built for location use.

At the centre of the camera is a 102 megapixel medium format CMOS sensor. That resolution leaves room to crop tightly and still print large, and it captures fine detail that rewards careful focusing and steady technique.

In-body stabilisation counters camera shake, which helps keep handheld shots sharp at slower shutter speeds. It reduces shake from camera movement, not subject motion. The shutter tops out at 1/4000 second, which can restrict wide apertures in bright light.

Autofocus offers 425 selectable points, so you can place focus precisely in the frame instead of focusing and recomposing. Continuous shooting reaches 5 frames per second, enough for deliberate subjects but a real limit on fast action. The X-Processor 4 handles the camera's image processing.

Framing happens through a 3.69 million dot electronic viewfinder, and the native ISO range runs from 100 to 12800.

The GFX100S records video up to 4K resolution, which covers delivery to current screens, televisions and online platforms.

The maximum frame rate is 60fps, a separate limit from the maximum resolution. Sixty frames per second suits smooth motion and mild slow-motion work; if heavy slow motion is central to your projects, weigh that ceiling before buying.

Clips save as MPEG-4 or MOV. On a medium format camera built around high-resolution stills, video serves as a companion capability for shoots that need moving images too.

A timelapse function is built in, so the camera handles interval shooting without a separate trigger. Frames drawn from the high-resolution sensor give finished sequences good latitude for cropping in post.

The 3.2-inch TFT LCD carries 2.36 million dots, so playback and menus look crisp. Touch control is supported, and the screen flips out, which makes waist-level, overhead and other awkward-angle shots far easier to compose.

Framing can also happen through the electronic viewfinder with its 3.69 million dots, and live view rounds out the shooting options.

The body is weather sealed, so it copes better with dust and moisture than an unsealed body would, though sealing is not waterproofing. There is no built-in flash, but an external flash can be fitted, and GPS is absent.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both built in, so the camera can connect wirelessly to compatible phones and tablets.

Two card slots take SD, SDHC and SDXC media with UHS-II support, so both fast and high-capacity cards are usable. The second slot adds capacity on a long shoot, and two cards fitted at once mean fewer pauses to swap media.

The NP-W235 battery is rated at 480 shots, though the measurement conditions behind that figure are not stated, so real endurance may differ with your settings and usage. For long location days, carrying a spare battery is sensible planning.

USB charging is supported, so the battery can be refilled through a USB connection rather than only through a dedicated charger. Use a power source that provides a compatible output.
