Fujifilm X-S10

Fujifilm introduced the X-S10 in 2020 as a compact mirrorless camera. At 465 g and 126 x 85 x 65 mm, it slips into a small bag and stays comfortable on long walks.

The 26 megapixel APS-C sensor works with the Fujifilm X mount, so you can draw on the lenses made for that system. In-body stabilisation helps keep handheld shots sharp when the light drops.

A flipping screen and an electronic viewfinder cover both eye-level work and shots taken at arm's length, which suits travel and everyday photography.

The 26 megapixel APS-C sensor produces files with room to crop or print at large sizes. The X-Processor 4 handles the data, and the ISO range runs from 160 to 12800, so you can work in bright sun and dim interiors alike.

Autofocus uses 425 points, and burst shooting reaches up to 20 frames per second. That figure is a maximum rather than a sustained-rate promise, but it gives you a fair chance at fleeting action.

In-body stabilisation reduces camera shake, so slower shutter speeds become usable handheld. It will not freeze a moving subject, so action still needs a fast shutter, but static scenes in evening light are far more workable.

The main constraint is the 1/4000 second maximum shutter speed. In strong daylight it can limit how wide you open the aperture, especially with the 160 minimum ISO leaving little scope to go lower.

Video tops out at 4K, which is enough resolution for most projects and leaves latitude to reframe slightly in editing.

Frame rates go up to 240 fps, so fast movement can be slowed right down in post. That is useful for sport, water and wildlife moments you want to stretch out.

A built-in timelapse function automates interval shooting, so you can capture a scene changing without an external timer. Clips record as MPEG-4 or MOV, formats that open in common editing software.

The flipping screen and in-body stabilisation both carry over to video work, making handheld framing easier and shake less visible. The electronic viewfinder also offers eye-level framing when you prefer to shoot that way.

The 3-inch TFT LCD offers 1.04 million dots and touch control. Touch input makes quick adjustments easier than button-pushing, and the panel flips for overhead or low-angle shots.

There is a built-in flash for a burst of fill light on close subjects, and the camera also accepts external flash when you need more power.

Bluetooth is the only wireless link supplied, with no Wi-Fi and no GPS. If you want location data in your files, your phone will have to provide it.

The body has no weather sealing, so keep it sheltered from rain and dust. For careful owners that is a small consideration; for anyone shooting outdoors in poor conditions it matters more.

Storage is a single SD slot, compatible with SD, SDHC and SDXC cards at UHS-I speed. With no second slot, cards cannot be duplicated in camera, so carry spare cards for jobs you cannot repeat.

The NP-126S battery is rated at 325 shots. Treat that figure as a benchmark rather than a promise of real-world endurance. A second battery is a sensible buy for full days out.

USB charging lets you top the battery up without a dedicated mains charger, which is handy between shoots. Since cards and power each live in one place, planning is simple: one card, one battery, and spares of both when the shoot matters.
