Panasonic DC-ZS70 / DC-TZ90

Panasonic released this compact in 2017, and at 112 x 67 x 41 mm and 322 grams it still fits a jacket pocket. That portability shapes the whole design: a camera you actually carry is the one that gets used.

The lens is fixed, so there is nothing to swap, clean or buy. One body covers everyday stills and 4K video, which suits travel and family shooting where simplicity matters more than expandability.

Framing can fall to a flip-out touchscreen or an electronic viewfinder, so low, overhead and eye-level angles all stay available. Both options share the same pocketable body, which keeps travel shooting simple.

Stills come from a 20 megapixel CMOS sensor of the 1/2.3-inch format, with sensitivity running from ISO 80 up to a maximum of ISO 3200. That resolution leaves room for prints and modest crops.

Autofocus offers 49 points for placing focus around the frame, and burst shooting runs up to 10 frames per second at its maximum setting. That top rate is not a sustained figure, but it covers a short action moment.

In-body stabilisation reduces the camera shake that creeps into handheld shooting, which helps in dim interiors and towards evening. It has no effect on a moving subject, so shutter speed still does that work.

Because the lens is fixed, there are no lens decisions to make and nothing to mount. Framing falls to a 1,166,000-dot electronic viewfinder or the rear screen, and the 1/2000 second maximum shutter speed is the ceiling for freezing very fast motion.

Video recording reaches 4K, and the camera's highest frame rate is 60 frames per second. Those are separate limits rather than a confirmed combined mode. Files record as MPEG-4 or MOV, and the 4K resolution leaves room for cropping in an edit.

The flip-out screen earns its keep here. You can frame yourself for talking pieces, or hold the camera low or high without guessing the composition.

In-body stabilisation also applies to footage, damping the shake that handheld recording picks up. It acts on your own movement, not on anything moving through the frame.

A built-in timelapse mode handles interval work in camera, capturing slow changes such as clouds or a sunset without extra gear.

Framing and review fall to a 3-inch LCD with 1,040,000 dots. It is a touchscreen, so settings respond to taps, and it flips out for waist-level shots, overhead reaches and self-portraits.

A built-in flash is on hand for dim rooms and evening snapshots. There is no provision for an external flash, so any extra light has to come from elsewhere in the scene.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both built in, so the camera has wireless connectivity available. What that enables in day-to-day use depends on the connected equipment and setup.

Two gaps matter outdoors: there is no GPS for tagging photo locations, and the body has no weather sealing, so rain and dust call for care.

Recording goes onto SD, SDHC or SDXC cards in a single slot. Because there is no second slot writing a backup, a spare card carried separately is the practical answer for a long day of shooting.

The DMW-BLG10 battery is rated at 380 shots. Treat that figure as a guide rather than a guarantee of real-world endurance, since shooting habits vary widely, and a second battery is worth packing for longer trips.

The battery also charges over USB, so you can top it up between outings instead of waiting for a mains charger. That flexibility keeps power planning simple on the road.
