The Nikon Coolpix A1000 is a pocket-sized compact released in 2019. It pairs a fixed lens with a small sensor, so there is nothing to swap or upgrade. At 330g it rides in a coat pocket rather than a camera bag.

That self-contained design suits travellers, families and casual photographers who want one camera for both stills and video without extra lenses or accessories.

Owning it is simple. Framing happens entirely on the screen because there is no viewfinder, and the slim body means there is little to carry beyond a spare battery.

Stills come from a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor in the small 1/2.3-inch format. That resolution leaves room for prints and everyday sharing. The lens is fixed, so the focal range you buy is the one you keep, and no other lens can be fitted.

For action, the camera can fire at up to 10 frames per second, enough to catch a fleeting moment. A 1/4000 sec maximum shutter speed keeps bright daylight scenes manageable. Focusing is handled by 16 autofocus points.

Sensitivity runs from ISO 125 to 6400. The low base suits bright conditions, and a built-in flash is on hand when light runs short.

In-body stabilisation reduces camera shake, so handheld shots at slower shutter speeds stay sharper, though it cannot freeze a moving subject. Because there is no viewfinder, you hold the camera out to frame on the screen, which makes that shake reduction especially useful.

The A1000 records video at up to 4K resolution, with a top frame rate of 30fps available. These are separate maximums, so a combined 4K 30fps recording mode is not confirmed. Files are written as MPEG-4 or MOV.

A built-in timelapse mode automates interval shooting, so you can produce a sequence of clouds or crowds without an external trigger.

Framing relies on the 3-inch screen, and live view keeps the display active while recording. Because the screen flips out and responds to touch, you can set the camera low or high, or angle it toward yourself, and still see and control the shot.

The camera also has in-body stabilisation, which reduces camera shake, although it is not confirmed whether this carries over to video recording.

The 3-inch TFT LCD offers 921,000 dots, enough detail to judge focus. Touch control makes setting changes and playback quick, and the screen flips out for overhead or waist-level work that a fixed display would make awkward.

Live view is available, and a built-in flash provides light indoors or after dark. There is no support for an external flash, so lighting options stay internal.

Wi-Fi is built in for wireless connection, but Bluetooth is absent. There is also no GPS, so the camera itself will not tag photos with location data.

The body is not weather sealed, so rain and dust call for care and a pocket close to hand.

A single slot takes SD, SDHC or SDXC cards, so one card carries the whole shoot. With no second slot, there is no in-camera copy of your files, which makes spare cards worth packing for long days.

Power comes from an EN-EL12 battery rated at 250 shots. That figure is a guideline rather than a promise of real-world endurance, so a charged spare is a sensible addition to the bag.

The battery recharges over USB, which makes topping it up between shoots straightforward. SDXC support also means large-capacity cards fit, so storage need not be the limit on a longer trip.
