Olympus Pen E-PL10

The Pen E-PL10 is a compact mirrorless camera from Olympus, released in 2019. At 117 x 68 x 39 mm and 380 g, it slips into a small bag and stays comfortable on long walks.

Lenses attach through the Micro Four Thirds mount, and the camera uses its rear screen for framing because it has no viewfinder.

A flip-out touchscreen assists with framing, and built-in WiFi and Bluetooth provide wireless connection options. 4K video is available when you want clips as well as photos.

The Pen E-PL10 pairs a 16 megapixel Micro Four Thirds CMOS sensor with the TruePic VIII processor. The ISO range runs from 200 to 25600, so sensitivity can be raised as indoor light fades, though the range alone does not describe how images look at each setting.

Autofocus offers 121 focus points. The count alone does not describe focusing speed or subject tracking.

In-body stabilisation reduces camera shake, so handheld shots at slower shutter speeds, or with a longer lens, stay usable. Because it sits in the body rather than the lens, it applies whichever lens you mount. It steadies your own movement, not a moving subject's.

When action appears, the camera fires at up to 14 fps, a maximum rate rather than a promise of sustained speed. The 1/4000 s maximum shutter speed is available for freezing fast motion.

The E-PL10 records 4K video as its maximum resolution. Footage saves as MPEG-4 or MOV, so you can choose between the two file formats.

Frame rates reach up to 60 fps for video, separate from the 14 fps stills burst. Maximum resolution and maximum frame rate are also separate limits, so check which recording modes combine them before planning a shoot.

A built-in timelapse mode automates interval shooting, so you can capture a sunrise or a busy street unfolding without extra gear or manual timing.

The flip screen helps you compose at angles where a fixed screen would leave you guessing. At 380 g, the body keeps a handheld setup light.

The 3-inch LCD carries about 1.04 million dots. It flips out for composing at unusual angles, and touch control allows direct settings changes. Live view shows the scene on the screen as you shoot.

WiFi and Bluetooth are both built in for wireless connectivity.

A built-in flash adds light for close indoor shots, and the camera also supports an external flash when you need more power or directional light.

There is no GPS, so the camera does not record location data on its own. There is no weather sealing either, so keep it dry in rain or dust. A phone could still handle location tagging, but nothing is built in.

Photos and video land on a single SD, SDHC or SDXC card, and UHS-I cards are supported. With one slot there is no in-camera backup, so choose a card with enough capacity for the whole shoot.

The BLS-50 battery is rated at 350 shots, though the rating does not state its test conditions. Actual endurance will vary with how much you use the screen and wireless features, so a second battery is worth packing for a full day out.

The camera does not charge over USB, so topping the battery up from a laptop or power bank through the camera is not an option. Charging stops need planning around that limit when travelling.
