Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI

The RX100 VI is a compact camera from Sony, released in 2018. It measures 102 x 58 x 43 mm and weighs 301 g, so it travels in a jacket pocket rather than a camera bag.

That size and weight make it a natural fit for travel and everyday photography, where a small camera gets carried and a large one gets left at home.

It shoots stills and 4K video, so one pocketable body covers both kinds of shooting. A built-in flash and GPS add convenience without extra accessories.

A one-inch CMOS sensor, handled by the Bionz X processor, produces 20-megapixel files. Sensitivity runs from ISO 125 to 12800, starting low for bright conditions and reaching higher when light fades.

Burst shooting reaches 24 fps at its maximum, though a maximum figure is not a promise of sustained speed. The shutter tops out at 1/2000 of a second, capping how far you can freeze motion or open the aperture in strong light. The 315 autofocus points are available for focus placement.

In-body stabilisation counteracts camera shake, so handheld shots at slower shutter speeds stay more dependable. It has no effect on a moving subject, so action still depends on shutter speed.

The electronic viewfinder offers 2,359,296 dots and gives a clear eye-level view when the screen is hard to see. Because the lens is fixed, its optical character is decided at purchase and there is no mount for adding other lenses.

Recording tops out at 4K resolution. Files can be written in XAVC S, AVCHD or MPEG-4, so you can match the format to your editing and playback setup.

Frame rates reach 120 fps, which is enough for slow-motion footage of sport, water or anything else that moves quickly. The 4K resolution and 120 fps figures are separate maximums, not one combined 4K-at-120 recording mode.

There is no built-in timelapse mode, so interval work is not offered in-camera. Footage records to the single card slot, which accepts SD, SDHC and SDXC or Memory Stick Duo media.

The flip screen helps when filming at low or high angles, or with yourself in the frame. Stabilisation keeps handheld clips steadier by reducing camera shake, and the electronic viewfinder offers an eye-level alternative.

The three-inch LCD carries 1,228,800 dots for a sharp view and accepts touch input, with live view for composing. It also flips, so you can shoot from the waist or overhead and still see the frame.

The camera carries Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for wireless connection to other gear, and GPS records where each shot was taken, which helps organise a travel gallery by shooting location.

A built-in flash covers dim interiors, but there is no provision for an external flash, so lighting options stay limited. The body has weather sealing against dust and moisture, though heavy rain still calls for care.

A single card slot accepts SD, SDHC and SDXC cards as well as Memory Stick Pro Duo and Pro-HG Duo. The card choice is broad, but with no second slot you manage your space as you shoot. There is also no in-camera backup copy of a card's files.

The NP-BX1 battery is rated at 250 shots, a figure that depends on measurement conditions rather than real-world use. A charged spare is worth packing for a full day out.

USB charging lets you top the battery up from a laptop or charger between shoots. Check your particular power source rather than assuming every power bank will cooperate.
