General

About This Lens

The Canon RF 14-35mm F/4L IS USM is an ultra-wide zoom for Canon's full-frame RF mount. It runs from 14mm, which takes in a great deal of any scene, to 35mm, which frames a more moderate view. Landscape, architecture and interior photographers form the natural audience. So does anyone shooting in tight rooms where stepping back is impossible.

Canon introduced the lens in 2021. The f/4 maximum aperture is the main trade-off to consider in dim interiors or at dusk. Available light and subject movement determine whether that opening permits the shutter speed you need.

About the Build

The lens weighs 1 lb 3 oz (540 g) and measures 3.31 in (84.1 mm) across and 3.93 in (99.8 mm) long. Those figures make it a small, light ultra-wide zoom to carry. The front thread takes 77mm screw-in filters, so a directly attached filter must match that size.

About the Optics

At 14mm on a full-frame body, this lens frames an extremely wide view. That width suits cathedral interiors, tight courtyards and landscapes where you want foreground and sky together. The 35mm end frames a more moderate slice, useful for a building facade or one section of hillside.

The f/4 maximum aperture stays available at every focal length. Zooming changes the composition, so a meter reading can still change with the scene. In dim light, check the shutter speed and ISO required. A smaller aperture increases depth of field but reduces the light available for the exposure.

Closest focus is 0.7 ft (20 cm) throughout the zoom. Maximum magnification reaches 0.38x at 35mm. This range can help with shoreline rocks, flowers or details within an interior. The distance is measured from the sensor, so allow room ahead of the glass for light and avoid shading the subject.

Depth of field depends on aperture, focal length and focus distance. A nearby foreground and distant buildings may need a smaller aperture to appear sharp together. Choose the focus position deliberately and check both parts of the scene. A close subject can still have a soft background.

Features

About the Features

Built-in image stabilisation helps reduce blur from camera shake. It can assist handheld photographs of still interiors or dusk landscapes. It does not freeze walking people or wind-blown plants, so choose a shutter speed that suits their movement.

The body is designed to resist dust and moisture. Use cover in persistent rain and protect the open mount during lens changes. A fluorine coating helps water and oil release from the front glass. Remove loose grit before wiping, and dry the exterior before storage.

There is no zoom lock switch. Check the selected focal length before a sequence and after moving the camera. Keep the front capped during transport.

Construction

About the Construction

The 16-element, 12-group design includes three aspherical and three UD elements, with one element combining both types. Aspherical surfaces help correct distortion and spherical aberration. Distortion can make straight building edges appear curved.

UD glass helps reduce chromatic aberration, where colours focus differently and leave fringes along high-contrast edges. Branches against bright sky are one relevant example. The presence of these elements does not establish measured image quality.
