General

About This Lens

This Canon RF full-frame zoom covers 15–30mm, an ultra-wide span for interiors, architecture and sweeping landscapes. It arrived in 2022 and remains in production, so it is a current design.

Photographers shooting real estate, cathedral interiors or mountain scenes will find the range practical. At 30mm you can tighten a frame without changing position, which helps in cramped rooms. It also suits travel, where one lens covers most wide scenes.

The main trade-off is the slow f/4.5–6.3 maximum aperture. It keeps the body small and light, but it limits handheld work in dim rooms and at dusk. A tripod or the stabiliser can offset that in many scenes.

Optics

50/100
About the Optics

At 15mm the lens frames whole rooms, tall ceilings and wide skies in one shot. Real-estate and interior photographers can stand close to a wall and still capture the space. You can also fit an entire building facade from across a narrow street.

Zooming to 30mm tightens the view and reduces the stretched look that ultra-wide angles give nearby objects. That end also works for environmental portraits inside small homes. Landscapes at 30mm give a more natural sense of scale when 15mm would push distant peaks too far back.

The f/4.5–6.3 maximum aperture suits daylight and well-lit interiors. In dark churches or at blue hour you will often raise ISO, because the widest setting shrinks to f/6.3 at 30mm. The optics specification scores 50 out of 100.

Close focusing at 0.9 ft (28 cm) lets you place flowers or rocks near the lens for foreground interest. Depth of field stays deep at these focal lengths, so near and distant scenery can both stay sharp at moderate apertures. 0.16x maximum magnification makes small details larger in the frame.

Features

26/100
About the Features

Built-in image stabilisation steadies the camera for handheld frames, which helps when interior light is too weak for the slow maximum aperture. It eases static scenes such as interiors and still landscapes. For architecture inside dim buildings, this can save carrying a tripod through restricted halls.

This lens has no weather sealing, so it needs care in rain or dust at coastal and mountain locations. A simple rain cover answers most of that risk. A fluorine coating is also absent, so wiping the front glass clean takes a little more effort. There is no zoom lock either.

Zooming is manual through a rotary ring, which gives direct control over framing. The features specification scores 26 out of 100.

Construction

About the Construction

Aspherical elements are included, and their shaped surfaces help correct distortion, which can otherwise curve straight walls and doorframes in ultra-wide shots.

Two low-dispersion elements help reduce chromatic aberration, which shows as coloured fringes along high-contrast edges such as branches against a bright sky. Internal focusing keeps the lens from extending as it focuses.
