What We Like
+Exceptional 600mm zoom range (200-800mm) in a compact, lightweight package for a super-telephoto lens
+5.5 stops of optical image stabilization enabling effective handheld shooting at long focal lengths
+Fast, quiet, and smooth Nano USM autofocus suitable for wildlife and sports photography
+Compatible with RF 1.4x and 2x teleconverters at all focal lengths for extended reach up to 1600mm equivalent
+Reasonably priced for its reach and capabilities compared to premium L-series telephoto options
+Dust and weather-resistant design with white exterior for thermal management in outdoor conditions
Worth Knowing
Variable aperture (f/6.3-9) limits low-light performance and requires higher ISO settings in dim conditions
Not parfocal—requires refocusing after focal length changes, which can slow workflow
Large and heavy (2050g) makes it difficult to fit in standard camera bags and tiring for extended handheld use
Slower autofocus motor compared to some premium alternatives, particularly when driving focus across large distances

Read our notes on general
The Canon RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM is the reigning superzoom champion in terms of focal range and is impressively lightweight and compact for its reach. In good lighting conditions, it delivers sharp results throughout most of the zoom range, although 800mm sharpness drops off somewhat, and the lens also features lightning-fast and accurate autofocus. However, its mediocre maximum aperture does limit its usefulness in low-light performance. The lens is best suited for wildlife and sports photographers working in daylight conditions who need serious telephoto reach without the price premium of larger-aperture professional lenses.
