General

About This Lens

The FUJINON XF 30mm F/2.8 R LM WR Macro is a close-up prime for Fujifilm X cameras with APS-C sensors. Its 30mm focal length gives a natural, standard view. That makes it a practical choice for product shots, food, plants and small objects photographed where they sit. Fujifilm introduced this lens in 2022, and it remains in production.

As a fixed 30mm prime, it asks you to frame by moving yourself rather than zooming. That trade-off suits deliberate close-up work, and the light body keeps it pleasant to carry all day. It doubles as a modest everyday prime when you are not shooting close-ups.

About the Build

At 6.9 oz (195 g), this is a small, light macro lens. It measures 2.36 in (60 mm) across and 2.74 in (69.5 mm) long, so it stows easily on the camera. The front thread accepts 43mm screw-in filters, so any filter you attach must match that size.

About the Optics

The lens's maximum magnification is 1x, which equals true 1:1 macro. A subject fills the frame at life size on the sensor. This is the magnification most photographers mean by macro work.

It focuses as close as 0.3 ft (10 cm) from the subject. Small objects such as flowers, coins or watch dials can fill the frame without accessories. The 30mm focal length also leaves some room between you and the subject, which helps when you position a reflector or small light.

The f/2.8 maximum aperture gathers enough light for handheld work indoors or on overcast days. Depth of field becomes extremely shallow near 1:1, though. Stopping down is the usual fix when you need more of a tiny subject sharp.

Nine aperture blades keep the opening round when you stop down. That shape smooths out-of-focus highlights behind leaves or table settings. Wide open, f/2.8 also gives mild subject separation for portraits and details, though not the strong blur of a longer, faster lens.

About the Features

The lens is weather sealed, so you can keep working through drizzle, sea spray or dusty conditions. Close-up work outdoors, such as photographing plants after rain, is where that matters most.

There is no built-in image stabilization. At high magnification, small camera movements show up clearly, so a tripod or a faster shutter speed must do the steadying. A monopod can serve the same purpose when you move around a garden.

The front glass also lacks a fluorine coating, the easy-clean treatment found on some lenses. Expect a little more care when wiping dust or water from the front element.

Construction

About the Construction

Aspherical elements are part of the design. Their specially shaped surfaces help correct optical faults, including distortion and spherical aberration. Those faults show clearly in product shots and copy work, so the correction is relevant here.

The lens also uses low-dispersion glass, which helps reduce chromatic aberration. Colour fringes often appear along high-contrast edges in close-up light, so that glass is well placed here.
