General

About This Lens

This prime wide angle serves Fujifilm X photographers working in APS-C. The 16mm focal length suits landscapes, architecture, interiors and night sky work, and it helps in rooms where you cannot step back. Environmental portraits also fit, since the wide view keeps the setting around the subject. The f/1.4 maximum aperture extends those subjects into dim light.

The fixed focal length is the main trade-off. You frame by moving yourself, not by turning a zoom ring. Fujifilm introduced the lens in 2015, so it is an older design in the X series.

About the Build

The lens weighs 13.2 oz (375 g) and measures 2.89 in (73.4 mm) across and 2.87 in (73 mm) long. Consider the weight of the camera and lens together when carrying them between landscape locations. Keep the front glass protected when you put the camera down.

The front takes 67mm screw-in filters. A polariser or ND filter for landscape work mounts directly on the lens thread.

About the Optics

At 16mm on APS-C, you can include a broad landscape or more of an interior from one position. Whether a whole building fits depends on distance. For a night scene, you can combine foreground detail with a wide stretch of sky. Check the frame edges for distracting objects.

The f/1.4 maximum aperture gives more room for a faster shutter speed or lower ISO than a smaller opening. It helps after sunset and indoors. Depth of field still depends on focus distance and aperture. A nearby subject can have a soft background; stop down when detail at several distances must stay sharp.

Closest focus is 0.5 ft (15 cm), measured from the sensor. That allows nearby details with some surroundings still included. The front glass sits closer than the sensor, so leave room ahead of it. At this distance, the camera or your body can cast a shadow over a flower or tabletop object.

Features

About the Features

Dust and moisture resistance help during landscape and night photography. Use cover in persistent rain. Keep the mount clean and dry when changing lenses, especially when working in a dusty location.

There is no stabilisation in the lens. A camera with body stabilisation can reduce shake for still scenes. Firm support helps with long night exposures. A faster shutter speed remains useful for people moving through an evening street, since steadying the camera does not stop their movement.

Construction

About the Construction

Two aspherical elements help correct optical faults including distortion and spherical aberration. Distortion can curve straight building edges, so this correction matters for architecture. Spherical aberration can soften detail when light rays focus at different points.

Two ED elements help reduce chromatic aberration, where different colours focus differently and leave fringes along high-contrast edges. Bare branches against bright sky are one example. These components describe the correction built into the design without proving measured image quality.
