General

About This Lens

The FUJINON XF 35mm F/1.4 R is a standard prime for Fujifilm X APS-C cameras. Its 35mm focal length suits people, street scenes and everyday subjects. Fujifilm introduced the lens in 2012, and it remains in production as an older design. It fits Fujifilm X-mount bodies as a compact standard option.

The wide f/1.4 aperture is the main draw for low-light work. It suits anyone who wants one light, discreet lens for daily shooting. The trade-off is a fixed focal length and no stabilisation, so it rewards photographers who frame with their feet.

About the Build

At 6.6 oz (187 g), the lens is light enough for daily walking with a small camera. It measures 1.98 in (50.4 mm) from the mount reference plane and 2.56 in (65 mm) across. The short body keeps the setup compact.

The front thread is 52mm, so a screw-in filter must match that size to attach directly. You can add a protective, polarising or neutral-density filter.

About the Optics

On Fujifilm APS-C cameras, 35mm gives a standard view between wide and telephoto. It suits single portraits, street details and everyday subjects. Your position controls perspective. Step back for less emphasis on a nearby face, or move closer when a foreground detail matters more than the wider scene.

The f/1.4 maximum aperture is the main optical strength. Compared with a smaller opening, it gives you more room to keep shutter speeds useful in dim rooms. It can also soften a distant background behind a nearby portrait subject. The amount of blur depends on distance as well as aperture.

You can use the extra light for a lower ISO instead, provided the shutter speed remains suitable. A person moving through a dim street may need a faster exposure than a still display in a shop window.

Closest focus is 0.9 ft (28 cm), measured from the sensor, which suits tabletop details. Maximum magnification is 0.17x. Close focus at f/1.4 can leave only a narrow area sharp. Stop down and choose the focus point carefully when more of an object needs to stay clear.

Features

About the Features

Image stabilization is absent, and that is the main feature gap. At 35mm, shake is easier to control than on long lenses, and the bright aperture gives you faster handheld shutter speeds to work with. Even so, nothing in the lens steadies the frame, and long exposures need a tripod or support.

There is no weather sealing, so avoid exposing the lens to rain or blowing dust. It remains useful outdoors in suitable conditions. A cover can help if the weather changes during a walk, and changing lenses under shelter reduces exposure.

The front element also has no fluorine coating. Water and oil will not shed as easily as on coated glass, so cleaning takes a little more care.

About the Construction

Eight elements sit in six groups. Among them is an aspherical element, a specially shaped surface that helps correct optical faults, including distortion and spherical aberration. Distortion can make straight edges appear curved, so that correction matters when streets and buildings fill the frame.
