General

About This Lens

This Fujifilm telephoto zoom gives X-mount APS-C photographers a practical route to distant subjects. It starts at 55mm, useful for portraits and tighter scenes, and reaches 200mm for wildlife, outdoor sport and detail picked out from a distance. Fujifilm introduced the lens in 2013, and it remains in production today.

The aperture is the main trade-off. Maximum aperture changes across the zoom, from f/3.5 to f/4.8, so dim light means raising ISO or leaning on the stabiliser. There is no weather sealing, and the feature set is otherwise modest for a lens of this age.

About the Build

The lens weighs 1 lb 4.5 oz (580 g) and measures 4.65 in (118 mm) long and 2.95 in (75 mm) wide. Screw-in filters must match its 62mm thread, and a plain filter can guard the front glass. The physical score is 93 out of 100.

Optics

55/100
About the Optics

Framing is the strength here. At 55mm you get a short telephoto view that flatters portraits and pulls a subject clear of its surroundings. Zoom toward 200mm and distant action fills the frame. A bird in a tree, players on a far touchline, or a facade detail high on a building all come within reach.

Light handling is the constraint. Wide open at f/3.5 near 55mm, the lens gives clear background separation for portraits and works in shaded streets. At 200mm the widest stop is f/4.8, so evening sport or woodland wildlife pushes ISO up unless you slow the shutter. The optics score is 55 out of 100.

Close framing is workable. The closest focusing distance is 3.6 ft (110 cm), so you can keep a comfortable gap from wary subjects. Maximum magnification reaches 0.18x, enough to frame larger flowers, food or detail studies. The aperture uses seven blades, which shapes highlights in out-of-focus areas.

Features

25/100
About the Features

Optical image stabilisation is built in. It counters camera shake, which matters most at 200mm, where small hand movements magnify across the frame. That makes slower handheld shutter speeds practical in fading light. The system steadies the camera, not the subject: a flying bird or a sprinting player still needs a fast shutter speed.

Protection is minimal. There is no weather sealing, so rain and dust call for care or a cover. The front glass has no fluorine coating, so fingerprints and spray need patient cleaning rather than a quick wipe.

There is no zoom lock either, so nothing fixes the barrel at its short setting when the lens hangs from the strap. The features score is 25 out of 100.

About the Construction

Inside are 14 elements in 10 groups, including aspherical elements and low-dispersion glass. The aspherical surfaces help correct optical faults such as distortion and spherical aberration. The low-dispersion glass helps reduce chromatic aberration, where different colours focus differently and produce coloured fringes. Those fringes can appear along high-contrast edges, such as branches against a bright sky when you track wildlife at 200mm.
