Nikon Z 35mm f/1.4

This Nikon prime is designed for full-frame Z-mount cameras. Its 35mm focal length suits street photography, travel and portraits that include the setting. A moderately wide view can help show a person at work or a group in a room. How much fits depends on your position and the scene.

Nikon introduced the lens in 2024. The f/1.4 maximum aperture is the main draw for dim interiors and evening streets. The fixed focal length means changing position to adjust framing. Check whether the view suits your intended subjects, especially where walls or barriers limit movement.

The lens weighs 14.6 oz (415 g) and measures 2.93 in (74.5 mm) across. Allow room for the hood and caps when packing it in a walking kit. Screw-in filters must match the 62mm front thread. A polariser can help control reflections from non-metallic surfaces, though its effect depends on camera position and light direction.

On full frame, 35mm gives a moderately wide view. You can show a person with some surroundings or select a detail by moving closer. Changing camera position alters perspective as well as framing, making near objects larger relative to the background.

The f/1.4 maximum aperture admits more light than a smaller opening. At a given shutter speed, it can allow a lower ISO in a dim restaurant or at dusk. Available light still determines the settings needed. A close subject can have a soft background when there is space behind it.

At close range, depth of field can be shallow with the aperture wide open. Focus on the important detail, such as an eye. Stop down when more depth is needed for a group, then check whether the resulting shutter speed is suitable for the people in it.

Closest focus is 0.9 ft (27 cm), measured from the sensor. This range can help with food, flowers and objects on a table. Leave room ahead of the lens for light, and check that the camera does not shade the subject.

The lens has sealing against dust and moisture. That helps when street and travel shooting meets dust, spray or drizzle, though it does not make the lens safe in heavy rain. For an everyday prime, that is a practical plus.

There is no image stabilisation in the lens. A camera with body stabilisation can help with shake. Firm support is useful for long exposures of still scenes, but a moving person can continue to blur. Choose shutter speed for the subject as well as your own hold.

Remove loose particles before wiping the front glass. Check for fingerprints when photographing towards a bright lamp or window. Keep the front capped during transport.

The optical design uses 11 elements in 9 groups, including two aspherical elements. Their specially shaped surfaces help reduce distortion, which can curve straight edges in interiors and street scenes. Focusing moves internal groups only, so the barrel keeps a constant length while you focus.
