Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm F/1.8 S

This Nikon prime gives full-frame photographers on Nikon Z cameras a light, single-focal-length option for everyday work. The 35mm focal length suits street scenes, travel and interiors. It frames people together with their surroundings rather than apart from them, which suits reportage-style portraits and busy public places.

The trade-off is framing freedom. With one focal length, you compose by moving closer or stepping back, and a distant subject stays distant. In exchange, the lens stays small, light and bright at F/1.8.

Nikon introduced this lens in 2018, and it remains in production today.

At 13.1 oz (370 g) and 3.39 in (86 mm) long, this prime stays light and compact enough for all-day carry on a Z body. The barrel is 2.87 in (73 mm) wide. A screw-in filter must match the lens's 62mm thread, so choose filters in that size.

The 35mm focal length is the everyday length this lens is built around. It is wide enough to take in a street, a room or a group of friends. Yet it keeps faces natural when you shoot people from a normal distance. Street work, travel and environmental portraits all use that balance.

The F/1.8 maximum aperture is the practical advantage in low light. It passes far more light than a small opening would, so evening streets, dim restaurants and candle-lit rooms stay handheld without pushing ISO as high. Nine aperture blades help out-of-focus highlights stay round when you shoot wide open.

Background separation at 35mm is gentle rather than extreme, so step close for stronger blur. The close focus of 0.8 ft (25 cm) helps here. It lets you fill the frame with a plate of food, an object on a table or a tight detail of a face. The bright aperture keeps shutter speeds usable indoors.

The optics specification scores 86 out of 100.

Weather sealing helps guard the lens against dust and moisture. A light shower on a street shoot or dust in a market needs less worry than an unsealed lens would.

There is no image stabilization. At 35mm, shake is easier to control than on a long lens, so moderate handheld shutter speeds remain workable. In very dim light, a steady hand, a higher ISO or a nearby support does the job instead.

The front element carries no fluorine coating, and no teleconverter fits this design, though a 35mm prime has little use for one. The features specification scores 32 out of 100.

The optical formula uses 11 elements in 9 groups, including three aspherical elements. Their specially shaped surfaces help correct distortion, which can make straight edges appear curved, and spherical aberration.

Two ED glass elements help reduce chromatic aberration. That is the coloured fringing that can appear along high-contrast edges, such as a bright window frame behind a portrait subject. It is a sensible set of corrections for a compact prime.
