General

About This Lens

This OM System zoom covers 12–100mm on the Micro Four Thirds mount, from a wide view to a long reach. That coverage makes it a one-lens choice for travel. You can frame streets and interiors at 12mm, portraits at mid lengths, then distant detail at 100mm. Street shooters, holiday makers and everyday photographers get the most from it. Fewer lens swaps also help in dusty or damp conditions.

The lens was introduced in 2016. Its f/4 maximum aperture is available throughout the zoom. In dim light, check whether that opening permits the shutter speed you need. Built-in stabilisation helps with camera shake, but moving people still require a suitable exposure time.

About the Build

The lens weighs 1 lb 3.8 oz (561 g) and measures 3.05 in (77.5 mm) across and 4.59 in (116.5 mm) long. That weight is noticeable on a compact Micro Four Thirds body. A screw-in filter must match the 72mm front thread.

About the Optics

The 12–100mm range offers varied framing without a lens change. At 12mm, the wide view suits interiors and landscapes. How much fits depends on your position and the scene. At 100mm, a distant detail occupies more of the frame from the same spot. Moving the camera changes perspective as well as framing.

The constant f/4 maximum aperture stays available at every focal length. Zooming still changes the composition, so a meter reading can change with the scene. Depth of field also varies with focal length and focus distance. A close subject can have a soft background, particularly with space behind it.

At 12mm, closest focus is 0.5 ft (15 cm) and maximum magnification is 0.3x. These values describe the wide end, rather than every zoom setting. A flower or small object can become a foreground detail within a wider scene. Leave enough room ahead of the lens for light to reach the subject.

On our specification scale, the optics score 68/100.

Features

About the Features

Built-in image stabilisation steadies the camera for handheld shooting. It helps reduce blur from hand movement at slower shutter speeds. That is useful for static scenes such as dusk cityscapes or shaded interiors.

The lens is sealed against dust and moisture. That protection suits coastal walks, dusty trails and changeable travel weather, the kinds of conditions a travel zoom often meets.

There is no zoom lock switch. Check the selected focal length when composing, especially after changing camera position. Remove loose particles before cleaning the front glass. Keep both caps on during transport and dry the exterior before storage after working in damp conditions.

Construction

About the Construction

The formula includes three aspherical elements plus one double-sided aspherical element. Their shaped surfaces help correct distortion and spherical aberration. Distortion can make straight building edges appear curved. Five ED elements help reduce chromatic aberration, the coloured fringes that can appear along high-contrast edges such as branches against bright sky.

Internal focusing keeps the external length unchanged as focus adjusts. This describes focusing movement, rather than zooming. Check focus on the important detail after you change the composition, particularly when working close.
