General

About This Lens

This Sony prime, released in 2022, gives APS-C E-mount bodies an ultra-wide 11mm view. It suits interiors, architecture and tight streets, where a standard lens cannot fit the scene in. At 6.4 oz (181 g), it is light enough to carry all day, and its small barrel suits compact APS-C bodies.

It also suits handheld video and vlogging. For anyone who already owns a standard zoom, it adds a much wider perspective for little extra weight. The trade-off is the fixed focal length. You reframe by stepping closer or back, not by turning a zoom ring.

About the Build

The lens weighs just 6.4 oz (181 g) and measures about 2.6 in (66 mm) across, so it adds little bulk to a small camera. It is about 2.26 in (57.5 mm) long. Its 55mm front thread accepts directly attached screw-in filters for controlling reflections or reducing incoming light.

About the Optics

At 11mm on APS-C, the frame is extremely wide. A small room takes in its walls and ceiling together. A building fits from a close pavement. That spread suits interior photography, architecture and cramped streets where a standard lens cannot back up far enough.

F/1.8 is bright for such a wide lens. Under streetlights or at dusk indoors, it keeps shutter speeds usable for handheld frames. The wide view also makes small camera movements less visible, which helps handheld video shot without a gimbal.

The wide focal length can help keep more of a scene in focus, especially when you stop down and focus farther away. At F/1.8 near the closest focus distance, the background can still blur strongly. Choose the aperture and focus distance to suit the balance you want.

Manual focus reaches 0.4 ft (12 cm), useful for close foreground details with the wider scene behind them. Maximum magnification is 0.2x in that mode. Autofocus has a longer minimum distance and lower maximum magnification. The optics specification score is 82/100.

About the Features

Weather sealing is present, giving the barrel some protection against dust and moisture during outdoor work in changeable weather. For a lens this small, it is a welcome extra for landscape and street days out.

A fluorine coating on the front element helps repel water and oil, so rain spots and fingerprints wipe off more easily. That matters when you shoot near splashing water or handle the lens often.

There is no image stabilisation built in. The wide view and bright aperture both help handheld shooting, but for smooth handheld video you may prefer a camera with its own sensor stabilisation. The features score is 52/100.

Construction

About the Construction

The optical formula includes three aspherical elements. Their shaped surfaces help correct distortion, which can curve straight edges, a real concern with wide lenses used for architecture.

Three low-dispersion elements help reduce chromatic aberration, the coloured fringes that can appear along high-contrast edges such as rooflines against bright sky. Focus is internal, so the lens keeps its length as it focuses.
