Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G

This Sony E zoom covers 24–50mm on full-frame cameras. Sony introduced it in 2024. The range suits travel, street scenes, interiors and events where you want people and their surroundings in the frame.

Its f/2.8 maximum aperture stays available throughout the zoom. The main trade-off is range: it stops at 50mm, so distant subjects may need a longer lens. There is also no stabilization built into the lens.

The small body suits carrying one standard zoom on a walk. A wider or longer lens adds views that this range cannot provide. Consider the scenes you photograph most often when choosing what else to carry.

The lens weighs 15.5 oz (440 g) and measures 3.63 in (92.3 mm) long and 2.94 in (74.8 mm) across. Consider the camera and lens together when choosing a bag or strap. Screw-in filters must match the 67mm front thread to attach directly.

The maximum aperture remains f/2.8 as you zoom. You can retain that opening when framing changes, although a different part of the scene may need a different exposure. In a dim room, f/2.8 gives more room for a faster shutter speed or lower ISO than a smaller opening.

At 24mm, you can include more of a room or street from one position. At 50mm, a person or detail becomes larger. How much fits still depends on where you stand. Zooming changes framing; a change of viewpoint changes perspective.

At close portrait distances, f/2.8 can give a thin zone of sharp focus. A background far behind the person can become soft. Focus on the eye that matters most, then stop down when more of the face or another person must stay sharp.

Closest focus is 0.6 ft (18 cm) at 24mm in manual focus, measured from the sensor. Autofocus has a slightly longer minimum distance. Maximum magnification reaches 0.33x in manual focus and is lower in autofocus. Leave room ahead of the glass and avoid shading a nearby detail.

There is no stabilization in the lens. A camera with body stabilization can reduce shake for still scenes. Firm support is useful for slow exposures or controlled video work. A moving person still needs enough shutter speed for their movement.

Dust and moisture resistance help outdoors. Use cover in persistent rain. Fluorine coating helps water and oily marks wipe away from the front glass. Remove loose grit before cleaning, especially after working near sand or soil.

The rotary zoom ring changes framing manually. There is no zoom lock switch. Keep the lens supported when carrying the camera between locations.

Four aspherical elements help correct distortion and spherical aberration, which can bend straight lines or soften detail.

Two ED elements help reduce coloured fringes along high-contrast edges, such as backlit hair or a person against a bright window.
