This Sony prime is built for the far end of telephoto work. It mounts on Sony E full-frame bodies and delivers a single 600mm focal length. Wildlife and outdoor sport are its natural territory, where subjects keep their distance. The f/4 maximum aperture is bright for a lens this long. That matters at first light, when many animals are active.

The trade-off is bulk and commitment. It weighs 6 lb 11.2 oz (3040 g) and gives you no zoom, so framing comes from position and planning rather than a twist of the barrel. Sony introduced it in 2019, so it is an established design rather than a brand-new one.

The lens weighs 6 lb 11.2 oz (3040 g) and measures 17.68 in (449 mm) long and 6.44 in (163.6 mm) across. Plan suitable support for long sessions, such as a monopod or tripod. There is no front filter thread, so filters cannot screw directly onto the front of the lens.

A600mm prime makes distant subjects larger in the frame. It suits a bird across a marsh or action beyond a sideline. How much of the frame a subject fills still depends on its size and distance. Choose a position that gives wildlife space and leaves a clear view.

The f/4 maximum aperture is bright for this focal length. Many animals are most active early and late in the day, when the light is weak. The wide opening then gathers more light than a smaller one would. At 600mm, f/4 can also soften the grass or crowd behind a perched bird or a striker.

Sealing against dust and moisture suits the outdoor conditions this lens works in. It is resistance rather than a promise of unrestricted shooting in sustained rain or sea spray. A fluorine coating on the front glass helps water and oil slide off, making the large front easier to clean after damp or dusty sessions. Blow or brush grit away first rather than wiping it across the glass.

It includes one ED element and three fluorite elements to help reduce chromatic aberration, the coloured fringes that can appear along high-contrast edges such as a bird against bright sky.
