General

About This Lens

This Tamron is an everyday zoom for APS-C mirrorless cameras. Separate versions fit Fujifilm X, Sony E, Canon RF and Nikon Z mounts. Its 17–70mm range runs from wide views to short telephoto.

The f/2.8 maximum aperture stays constant through the zoom, so dim rooms and evening streets stay workable. That brightness and reach come with some bulk and weight on a small camera.

Tamron announced the original Sony E version in 2020, with the Fujifilm X version following in 2022. The design remains in production. Check the mount when choosing a version for your camera.

About the Build

The Fujifilm X version weighs 1 lb 2.7 oz (530 g) and runs 4.71 in (119.6 mm) long. Its barrel measures 2.94 in (74.6 mm) across, so it is substantial beside a compact X body. These measurements describe that mount version; the other versions differ.

The front has a 67mm thread for directly attached screw-in filters. A matching polariser helps control reflections on glass or water, while an ND filter reduces incoming light for longer exposures.

About the Optics

The 17mm end works as a wide angle on APS-C. It fits whole rooms, table groups, and tight interiors without stepping back. That width helps indoors, where walls often limit your footing.

At 70mm the lens behaves as a short telephoto. It suits head-and-shoulder portraits and picking out a face in a crowd. The f/2.8 maximum stays available at every focal length, so you can keep shutter speeds up in dim light. Zoomed to 70mm, the same aperture also narrows depth of field enough to separate a subject from a busy background.

The nine-blade diaphragm remains nearly circular through two stops below its f/2.8 maximum. This helps out-of-focus points of light retain a rounded shape when you stop down modestly for a portrait. The effect is useful with distant lamps behind your subject.

At the wide end, close focus reaches 0.6 ft (19 cm), useful for food, flowers and small objects on a table. Maximum magnification is 0.21x at that end of the zoom.

Features

About the Features

VC stabilisation is built into the lens. It steadies the camera at slower shutter speeds, which suits dim interiors and handheld video. Keeping the shutter open longer lets you use lower ISO settings in the same light.

Moisture-resistant seals throughout the barrel help protect the lens during outdoor work. That is useful for travel and family days in changeable conditions. A fluorine coating on the front element helps water and oil slide off, so rain spots and fingerprints are easier to wipe away.

About the Construction

Three aspherical elements use specially shaped surfaces to help correct distortion and spherical aberration. Distortion can bend straight lines, so this design feature is useful when you photograph buildings and interiors at 17mm.

Two low-dispersion elements help reduce chromatic aberration, where colours focus differently and leave coloured fringes along high-contrast edges. Window frames against bright daylight are a typical case.
