General

About This Lens

This Tamron is an all-in-one superzoom for APS-C mirrorless cameras. Separate versions fit Fujifilm X, Sony E, Canon RF and Nikon Z bodies. Choose the one matching your camera. The 18–300mm range covers wide street scenes through distant wildlife.

The main trade-off is light gathering. The maximum aperture narrows from f/3.5 to f/6.3 as you zoom in. It suits travellers and families who value one lens for many subjects. Sony E and Fujifilm X versions arrived in 2021; Canon RF and Nikon Z versions followed in 2025.

About the Build

The Fujifilm X version weighs 1 lb 5.9 oz (620 g) and is 4.95 in (125.8 mm) long. Its body is 2.97 in (75.5 mm) wide, and other mount versions differ. A 67mm screw-in filter attaches straight to the front thread, so any polariser or ND filter must match that size.

About the Optics

The 18mm wide end suits street scenes, interiors and groups on APS-C. At 300mm, a distant subject becomes much larger in the frame. You can move from a broad view of a place to a distant detail from one position. That flexibility is useful when changing lenses would interrupt the moment.

At 18mm, the lens opens to f/3.5. By 300mm, the maximum is f/6.3, so less light reaches the sensor at a given shutter speed. In shade or dim indoor sport, you may need a higher ISO. Bright conditions give more room to balance shutter speed and image noise.

At 18mm, closest focus is 0.5 ft (15 cm), measured from the sensor, with 0.5x magnification. The front glass is very close to the subject at that setting. Leave clearance and watch for shadows. At 300mm, the minimum distance is longer and maximum magnification falls to 0.25x.

The long end can still soften a background at f/6.3. Subject distance and the space behind it matter as well as aperture. A nearby bird with distant trees behind it is easier to isolate than one surrounded by branches at a similar distance.

Features

About the Features

The lens includes Tamron's VC image stabilisation, which helps steady the camera for handheld shots. That help counts most at the 300mm end, where small camera movements have a larger effect on the frame. VC steadies the camera rather than a moving subject, so birds in flight still need a fast shutter speed.

Moisture-resistant construction helps outdoors. Use cover in persistent rain. A fluorine coating on the front glass helps water and oily marks wipe away, which makes field cleaning easier. Remove loose grit before using a cloth.

The zoom lock secures the ring at 18mm for carrying. It helps prevent the barrel extending under its own weight. Release it before turning the zoom ring.

Construction

About the Construction

Three hybrid aspherical elements help correct distortion and spherical aberration, which can bend straight edges or soften detail. Four LD elements help reduce coloured fringes at high-contrast edges. These corrections are useful when architecture fills the wide view or a bird appears against bright sky.

Focusing moves internal elements, so the lens keeps its length while you focus.
