About This LensThis 2024 prime gives full-frame photographers 500mm of reach, and it remains in production. It suits distant subjects such as birds, wildlife and aircraft. TTArtisan offers it in eight mount versions, including Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z and Fujifilm G. Pick the version made for your system. The trade-off is control. Focusing is manual only, and the maximum aperture is f/6.3. That combination rewards slow, deliberate work from a tripod in daylight. Static wildlife, the moon and distant landmarks suit it well. Fast action and dim light both ask more of the photographer.

About the BuildIt weighs 3 lb 9 oz (1617 g) and measures 12.48 in (317 mm) long. That is a lot of glass to hand-hold for long sessions. The front takes screw-in filters; any filter must match the 82mm thread of this lens.
| Lens Weight | 1617 g |
Lens Diameter ⓘWidth of the lens at its widest point | 88 mm |
Lens Length ⓘHow long the lens is from front to back. | 317 mm |
Front Filter Compatible ⓘSome lenses are compatible with front filters, some are compatible with back filters and some are compatible with both. Front filters are usually more convenient to add and remove.

About the OpticsAt 500mm, distant subjects fill the frame without heavy cropping. A bird across a marsh, a plane at an airshow or the moon overhead all sit comfortably in the frame. That reach also means you can photograph wary animals without disturbing them. Small camera movements shift the composition a lot. The f/6.3 maximum aperture sets the working light. In sunshine you can keep ISO low and still hold a fast shutter speed. Under tree cover or at dusk the ISO climbs quickly, because no wider setting exists to fall back on. Twelve aperture blades help the opening stay close to circular when stopped down, keeping out-of-focus highlights round rather than clipped. Round highlights flatter water and foliage behind a subject. Closest focus is 10.8 ft (330 cm), so perched birds and other approachable subjects can still fill the frame. Separately, the maximum magnification is 0.23x, enough for detailed frame-filling shots of moderately small subjects.

About the FeaturesImage stabilization is absent. At 500mm, camera shake shows far more than at short focal lengths, so hand-held shots need a fast shutter speed. A tripod or monopod is the practical answer. Support steadies the camera, but it does not freeze a moving subject, so a still subject is easier to keep sharp than a bird in flight. Weather sealing is absent too, so keep rain and spray off the barrel. The front glass also lacks a fluorine coating, so removing dust, grease and fingerprints takes a little more effort. Because focusing is manual, tools like focus peaking and magnified live view help you confirm focus precisely. Both features come from the camera body, not the lens. Careful focusing matters, because depth of field at 500mm is shallow even at f/6.3.
Weather Sealing ⓘWeather sealing capabilities will give you more confidence when shooting in unfavourable conditions. | No |
Fluorine Coating ⓘCoating to repel water and oil from lens elements. | No |

Teleconverter ⓘA teleconverter (extender) is an extra piece of equipment that fits between the lens and the camera body to enhance magnification | No |

Construction38/100 | |
About the ConstructionThe 8 elements in 5 groups include two low-dispersion elements. Low-dispersion glass helps reduce chromatic aberration, the coloured fringing that can appear along high-contrast edges such as a bird against bright sky. Focusing is internal, so the lens keeps its length while you turn the ring. Nothing extends toward a shy subject, which helps when working close to wildlife.
Elements ⓘLens elements refer to individual pieces of glass within the lens. | 8 |
| Groups | 5 |
Bi Aspherical Elements ⓘElements with two non-spherical surfaces | 0 |
Low Dispersion ⓘElements that reduce chromatic aberration | 2 |
Super Low Dispersion ⓘAdvanced elements further reducing chromatic aberration | 0 |
CA Reduction ⓘBuilt-in features to reduce chromatic aberration | 0 |
Internal Focusing ⓘInternal Focusing means that the lens does not change in size during focusing, and the front element does not rotate.
