What We Like
+Exceptionally compact at 30mm length—one of the smallest 50mm M-mount lenses available
+Sharp image quality across the entire frame even at wide aperture with excellent chromatic aberration control
+Close-focus capability to 0.5m enables high magnification for macro-style photography
+Excellent handling with well-designed focusing tab and intuitive aperture ring placement
+Lightweight at 135g with minimal viewfinder obstruction, adding almost no noticeable weight to camera body
+Outstanding value at approximately $600, considered one of the best value 50mm lenses for M-mount
Worth Knowing
Noticeable optical vignetting at f/2.2 and f/2.8, particularly on digital sensors, requiring post-processing correction
Moderate aperture f/2.2 limits low-light performance and shallow depth-of-field capability compared to faster alternatives
Some reports of build quality concerns and occasional focus accuracy issues on certain rangefinder bodies
Lacks the optical performance refinement of premium f/2.0 alternatives like Leica Summicron or Zeiss Planar designs

Read our notes on general
A compact and versatile standard prime designed for M-mount rangefinder cameras, the Voigtländer Color-Skopar 50mm f/2.2 VM combines excellent image quality including sharpness and control of chromatic aberrations with minuscule size and weight that practically disappears onto the camera. There is some optical vignetting due to design choices which is mostly only visible on digital sensors, but focusing to 0.5m provides some of the highest magnification available on an M-mount lens, making this a serious contender for the best value 50mm lens for M-mount at around $600.
