General

About This Lens

The NOKTON 40mm f/1.2 Aspherical is a manual-focus prime with full-frame coverage. Versions are offered for Canon RF, Nikon Z and Sony E. Choose the one made for your camera. The Canon RF version arrived in 2024; release dates differ between mounts. Its moderately wide view suits everyday scenes.

The f/1.2 maximum aperture is the defining feature. It suits low-light street work, evening interiors and portraits where you want the background to fall away. The trade-off is control: focusing is manual only, and there is no stabilisation, so this lens rewards patient, deliberate photographers.

About the Build

The Canon RF version weighs 14.1 oz (400 g) and measures 2.79 in (70.8 mm) across and 2.22 in (56.4 mm) long. Other mounts differ in size and weight. A screw-in filter attaches directly to the 58mm thread. Match that size when choosing a protective or effect filter for the lens.

About the Optics

On full frame, 40mm gives a view between moderate wide-angle and standard framing. It suits streets, dinner tables and portraits that include some setting. The result depends on your position and the subject size. Moving closer changes perspective as well as framing, making near details larger relative to the background.

The f/1.2 maximum aperture lets in more light than a smaller opening. At a given shutter speed, that can allow a lower ISO in evening streets or dim interiors. A nearby portrait subject can have a soft background when there is enough space behind them. Check focus carefully at the widest aperture.

Focusing is manual. Turn the focus ring while checking the important detail in the image. If your camera offers focus magnification or peaking, those tools can help, but inspect the result closely. A moving subject may require frequent adjustment. Practise with the camera and lens before an event you cannot repeat.

The Canon RF version focuses to 1 ft (30 cm), measured from the sensor. This can help with food, flowers and tabletop objects. Focus limits differ between mount versions, so use the limit for the lens you own.

Features

About the Features

There is no image stabilisation in this lens. The f/1.2 aperture partly compensates, because it gives you room to choose a faster shutter speed as light falls. Even so, you will rely on steady hands, a braced stance or a tripod once the evening grows truly dark.

There is no weather sealing, so protect the lens from rain, sea spray and heavy dust. Remove loose grit before wiping the glass, and keep both ends capped in your bag. Check that the mount is clean before attaching it to the camera.

Construction

About the Construction

Two aspherical elements use shaped surfaces to help reduce distortion and spherical aberration. Distortion can make straight building edges appear curved. Spherical aberration occurs when rays passing through different parts of a lens do not meet at the same focus. These corrections are useful in a wide-aperture design.
