General

About This Lens

This Zeiss prime pairs a 50mm focal length with a bright f/1.4 aperture, and it covers full frame. It comes in Canon EF and Nikon F versions, so choose the version made for your camera.

The 50mm focal length suits portraits, street scenes and everyday subjects, and it keeps working distances friendly. You frame by moving closer or stepping back.

The main trade-off is focusing. This lens is manual focus only, which suits slow, deliberate work rather than fast action. Zeiss introduced the Milvus 50mm in 2015, so it is an older design.

About the Build

The Canon EF version weighs 2 lb 0.5 oz (922 g) and runs 3.84 in (97.5 mm) long. That makes this a heavy lens for a 50mm prime, and you will notice it on a long day of walking. Other mount versions differ.

A screw-in filter attaches directly and must match the lens's 67mm thread.

About the Optics

On full frame, the 50mm view matches how your eye frames a scene. It works equally well one step from a portrait subject and across a street.

The f/1.4 maximum aperture is the defining strength. It passes a great deal of light to the sensor, so dim rooms, restaurants and evening streets stay workable without flash.

Depth of field at f/1.4 is very shallow, which separates a portrait subject from a busy background. Moving the subject away from the background deepens that separation. Stopped down, the nine blades keep the aperture close to round, so out-of-focus highlights tend toward soft circles. That shallow plane rewards the precise control of the manual focus ring.

Closest focus is 1.5 ft (45 cm), which leaves room for head-and-shoulders portraits and half-length work. Most everyday 50mm shooting happens farther away, so the limit rarely interferes.

Features

About the Features

Zeiss sealed this lens against dust and moisture. The sealing suits portrait and street work that carries on through drizzle, dust or sea air, and it protects the mechanism during long outdoor sessions.

There is no built-in image stabilization. In low light you depend on the wide aperture and a steady hold rather than on any help from the lens.

No fluorine coating is fitted either, so the front glass has no extra barrier against dirt and smears. The feature set is otherwise plain; our features score is 32 out of 100. Both mount versions share the same sealing and the same feature omissions.

Construction

About the Construction

Ten elements sit in eight groups, among them one aspherical element and four low-dispersion elements. The aspherical surface helps correct distortion and spherical aberration, faults that bend straight lines near the frame's edges. Street scenes often place windows and door frames there.

Low-dispersion glass helps reduce chromatic aberration, where colours focus at slightly different points and leave fringes along high-contrast edges. Backlit portraits, with hair or window frames against bright sky, are where that correction matters.
