Fujifilm GFX100 II

The GFX100 II is a 2023 mirrorless camera built around a 102-megapixel medium format sensor and Fujifilm's G lens mount. That resolution suits large prints and heavy cropping.

This is a big camera. It measures 152 x 117 x 99 mm, weighs 1030 g and carries weather sealing, so it suits planned shoots and deliberate work rather than lightweight everyday carry.

Such resolution makes the camera a fit for landscape, studio and commercial photography. It also records video up to 8K, so motion projects are an option alongside stills work.

At the heart of the camera is a 102-megapixel medium format CMOS sensor. That resolution leaves room for large prints and heavy cropping, and Fujifilm's X-Processor 5 handles the imaging pipeline.

Sensitivity runs from ISO 100 to 12800, covering bright outdoor light through to dimmer interiors. In-body stabilisation reduces camera shake, which helps when working handheld or at slower shutter speeds. It does nothing for subject movement, so moving subjects still need adequate shutter speeds of their own.

Autofocus uses 425 points, and the electronic viewfinder offers 9.44 million dots. That view is detailed enough to judge focus and framing carefully before you press the shutter.

The maximum burst rate is 8 frames per second. The top shutter speed is 1/4000 second, so very wide apertures in strong light may call for an ND filter to hold exposure.

Video is well supported. The camera records at resolutions up to 8K, and its highest frame rate is 120 fps for slow motion. These are separate maximums rather than a single combined mode, so resolution and frame rate pairings need to be confirmed for each setting.

Footage records in MPEG-4 using H.264 or H.265 compression. H.265 keeps high-resolution files more manageable, though your editing software needs to support it.

A built-in timelapse function rounds out the video tools, so you can create sequences without adding an external triggering device. Combined with the high recording resolutions and the separate 120 fps frame rate, the camera covers short clips, slow-motion footage and longer-form projects.

The rear LCD measures 3.2 inches with 2.36 million dots and responds to touch. That makes it quick to set focus points, move through menus and review images.

The screen does not flip or articulate, so overhead or waist-level framing is less convenient than with a moving display. Live view is available for composing on the screen instead of the viewfinder.

Weather sealing helps the body cope with dust and moisture during outdoor work. There is no built-in flash, but an external flash can be fitted, and there is no GPS for automatic location tagging.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth provide wireless connections to other devices, so the camera can be linked without relying solely on cables.

Two card slots are fitted. Supported media are SD, SDHC and SDXC cards at up to UHS II speed, plus Compact Flash Type B, so fast cards are available for high-resolution stills and video work.

With two slots fitted, the camera can hold two cards at once, which raises the storage you can carry before a card change on long jobs.

The NP-W235 battery is rated at 540 shots, though the measurement conditions behind that figure are not specified, so a spare battery is sensible for full days or heavy use.

The battery can be charged over USB, which simplifies topping it up between shoots.
