Leica SL3-S

The Leica SL3-S is a 2025 full-frame mirrorless camera with a 24 megapixel sensor. That resolution suits large prints and leaves latitude for cropping frames after capture.

It covers both stills and video work. Stills get in-body stabilisation and an electronic viewfinder, and video reaches up to 6K open gate recorded internally.

Practical features also round out the body: a 3.2-inch flipping touchscreen, built-in Wi-Fi and weather sealing suit outdoor and travel work, and the Leica L mount defines which lenses can attach.

Video tops out at 6K open gate at 30 fps, recorded internally in a 3:2 aspect ratio. Open gate captures a tall frame you can later crop for widescreen or vertical delivery, which gives flexibility in how each shot is finally framed.

For conventional projects, 4K at 60 fps records across the full sensor width with no crop. When you need slow motion, Full HD extends to 120 fps.

L-Log gives a flatter picture with room for colour grading, and 5.8K ProRes 422 HQ at 30 fps is offered for footage that will see heavy editing.

If you want RAW, 5.9K RAW outputs over HDMI with 4K and 6K options. That route means adding an external recorder to your kit and planning for the extra gear it involves.

A 24 megapixel full-frame sensor gives the SL3-S resolution suited to large prints and room to crop. How big you can print and how far you can reframe both follow from that figure.

In-body stabilisation steadies the sensor against camera shake, which helps you shoot handheld at slower shutter speeds and hold steady in dim interiors. It will not freeze a moving subject, so fast action still depends on your timing and technique.

The electronic viewfinder shows exposure and colour as the sensor sees them, so what you frame closely matches the file you keep. Framing happens at eye level through the eyepiece rather than at arm's length.

Lenses attach through the Leica L mount, so your lens choices live within that system. Plan a kit around the lenses available for L rather than assuming existing glass will fit.

The 3.2-inch screen serves for reviewing images and checking focus after each shot, and it responds to touch, which makes menu and setting changes quick. Touch input also helps when the screen sits at an awkward angle.

The screen flips as well, so you can shoot from low or high angles, or hold the camera at waist level, while still seeing the frame clearly.

Weather sealing protects the body against dust and moisture in changeable conditions. It is not a waterproof guarantee, so keep rain protection handy in serious weather.

Wi-Fi is built in, so the camera can connect wirelessly to other devices.
