What We Like
+Internal R3D NE RAW recording at 6K/60p with RED color science—no external recorder needed
+Compact, lightweight cinema body (540g) ideal for gimbal, gimbal, and solo production work
+Industry-first 32-bit float audio recording with configurable built-in mics and professional routing
+Advanced deep-learning autofocus with 9-subject detection modes for reliable solo operation
+Exceptional value at $2,199—significantly cheaper than comparable cinema cameras from Sony and Canon
+Large, bright 4-inch DCI-P3 touchscreen with articulating design for flexible monitoring and framing
Worth Knowing
No electronic viewfinder (EVF)—display-only operation may limit handheld stills photography and direct eye-to-camera framing
Limited accessory mounting: single tripod thread without anti-twist pins; requires third-party cages for rig compatibility
Micro HDMI instead of full-size HDMI connection is unconventional for a cinema-focused camera
Recording time limited to ~125 minutes under ideal conditions; performance varies with temperature and power settings

Read our notes on general
The Nikon ZR is a full-frame digital cinema camera announced by Nikon on 10 September 2025, as the company's first model co-developed with RED Digital Cinema following Nikon's acquisition of RED in 2024. The ZR employs a 24.5-megapixel partially stacked full-frame CMOS sensor and the Expeed 7 image processor, both the same as the Nikon Z6III. It features the same 24.5MP 'partially Stacked' sensor as the Z6III and inherits many capabilities from the more stills-oriented camera, but gains a new Raw video codec, video-focused UI and internal 32-bit float audio recording – a first in the industry. At just over $2,000, the Nikon ZR is an amazing value, marking an amazing start to Nikon's "cinema" camera line.
