Read the Optics ComparisonOpticsThe K-01 has in-body stabilisation, so every Pentax KAF lens you mount gains steadier handheld shooting at slower shutter speeds in dim interiors. The NEX-5R lacks it, so unstabilised Sony E lenses depend on the shutter speed you pick. Both use APS-C CMOS sensors with near-identical resolution, 16.28 MP versus 16.1 MP, so room to crop a distant subject is effectively shared. For moving subjects the NEX-5R is the stronger pick, shooting at up to 10 fps against the K-01's 6 fps, with 99 autofocus points against 81. It also reaches 25600 ISO natively, a ceiling the K-01 matches only through its expanded range. Both cap the shutter at 1/4000 second and offer no built-in viewfinder, so framing happens on the rear screen.

| Features | 41/100 | 54/100 |
Read the Features ComparisonFeaturesThe NEX-5R is the better camera for awkward angles, because its 3-inch screen both tilts and responds to touch. You can frame low to the ground or over a crowd, then tap to set focus. The K-01's fixed, non-touch TFT screen offers neither adjustment. The K-01 counters with a built-in flash, giving instant fill for a backlit portrait where the Sony needs an accessory. The two screens sit at essentially equal dot counts, 921000 against 920000, on the same 3-inch size. Both offer WiFi for wireless transfer, live view, and support for an external flash. Neither includes GPS or weather sealing.
Builtin flash ⓘA built-in flash will often be positioned right above the lens. This will automatically pop up when you activate it. |

Verdict
Choose the K-01 if you shoot handheld in dim light: stabilisation with any Pentax KAF lens, a built-in flash and a 540-shot battery rating suit travel, interiors and mixed-condition days. Choose the NEX-5R when portability and speed matter more, since its 276 g body, up to 10 fps bursts and tilting touch screen make it the carry-everywhere option for candid and street work.
Beyond that, the decision largely follows the lens system you want to build on, Pentax KAF or Sony E, because both deliver similar APS-C stills resolution and the same Full HD video ceiling.
