About This LensThis Sigma prime was introduced in 2017. Separate versions fit Micro Four Thirds and several APS-C camera systems, including Canon EF-M, Fujifilm X, L-Mount, Nikon Z and Canon RF. Choose the version for your camera. The smaller Micro Four Thirds sensor gives tighter framing than the APS-C versions. It suits everyday scenes, environmental portraits and work in dim rooms. The f/1.4 aperture is the main strength. On APS-C, 16mm gives a wide view, while Micro Four Thirds users get a more moderate view for people and their surroundings. The fixed focal length requires you to choose your position carefully. The Micro Four Thirds version has no built-in stabilization, so the camera body and your technique matter for handheld work.

About the BuildThe Micro Four Thirds version weighs 13.9 oz (395 g) and runs 3.59 in (91.1 mm) long, with a 2.84 in (72.2 mm) body. Screw-in filters attach directly to the 67mm thread, so a plain protective filter is straightforward.

About the OpticsThe view depends on your camera format. On APS-C, 16mm can include a broad interior or a landscape with foreground detail. On Micro Four Thirds, less of the scene fits from the same position. Check the space available before using it for a group or a small room. The f/1.4 opening gives more light than a smaller aperture. You can use that difference for a faster shutter speed or lower ISO in a dim room. For stars, it gives more room for shorter exposures, though the acceptable exposure time still depends on the movement visible in the frame. Closest focus is 0.8 ft (25 cm), measured from the sensor. That suits food and details on a table. Maximum magnification is 0.1x, so very small subjects remain modest in the frame. The front glass sits closer than the sensor; leave room and avoid shading the subject. At close distances, f/1.4 can leave a thin sharp zone even with wide framing. A near object and a far background will not necessarily both stay clear. Stop down and choose the focus distance for the details that matter.

About the FeaturesThe mount has dust and splash protection on the versions other than Canon EF-M. That helps at the join between camera and lens. Use cover in persistent rain and protect the lens when changing it outdoors. The Micro Four Thirds version has no built-in stabilization. A camera with body stabilization can help with camera shake, while firm support is useful for long exposures or steady video. Choose enough shutter speed for people who move. The Micro Four Thirds front glass lacks a fluorine coating. It therefore lacks that specific help with water and oily marks. Use ordinary careful cleaning after fingerprints or spots.
Weather Sealing ⓘWeather sealing capabilities will give you more confidence when shooting in unfavourable conditions.

Construction54/100 | |
About the ConstructionThe shared optical design uses two aspherical elements to help correct distortion and spherical aberration. Three FLD and two SLD elements help reduce coloured fringes along high-contrast edges, such as dark branches against a bright sky. Internal focusing keeps the barrel length fixed as focus changes, which is useful when composing near a tabletop.
Elements ⓘLens elements refer to individual pieces of glass within the lens. | 16 |

Aspherical Elements ⓘThe number of aspherical lens elements which can help correct aberrations such as spherical aberration. | 2 |
Bi Aspherical Elements ⓘElements with two non-spherical surfaces | 0 |
Low Dispersion ⓘElements that reduce chromatic aberration | 2 |
Super Low Dispersion ⓘAdvanced elements further reducing chromatic aberration | 0 |
CA Reduction ⓘBuilt-in features to reduce chromatic aberration | 3 |
Internal Focusing ⓘInternal Focusing means that the lens does not change in size during focusing, and the front element does not rotate.
