What We Like
+Outstanding sharpness even at f/1.8, with excellent edge performance
+Fast, accurate, and nearly silent STM autofocus with face/eye detection
+Exceptional build quality with all-metal construction and comprehensive weather sealing
+Innovative features like built-in LCD display, de-clickable aperture ring, and customizable buttons
+Minimal distortion and optical aberration for a 16mm ultra-wide lens
+Excellent value at $550-$580 versus $1,600+ for comparable native lenses
Worth Knowing
−Heavy at 550g compared to some competing ultra-wide lenses
−Significant vignetting at maximum aperture requiring correction (typical for ultra-wides)
−Firmware updates are complex and multi-step, with reported issues
−Plastic lens hood does not match the premium metal construction of the lens body

About This LensThe Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 is a fast, wide-angle prime lens available with autofocus for Nikon Z and Sony E mounts. The optical performance is pretty special, and there is no wide angle prime lens offering better bang for the buck. The build quality is top-notch, thanks to a dust-proof, all-metal construction with internal focusing, with the weight kept at manageable 550g. The STM AF is decently fast and noiseless with no relevant focus breathing. | |
