What We Like
+Exceptional optical performance with outstanding sharpness and micro-contrast across frame
+Beautiful bokeh rendering with 10-blade aperture and smooth transitions; excellent flare resistance
+Fully mechanical focus mechanism with 257° rotation angle provides precise manual control
+Premium all-metal construction with robust weather sealing and tactile focus ring
+De-clickable aperture ring for silent operation during video work
Worth Knowing
−Severe longitudinal chromatic aberration (LoCA) at wide apertures causes visible color fringing in out-of-focus areas
−Very long manual focus throw requires deliberate focusing; challenging for fast-moving subjects
−Premium $2,299 price point significantly higher than comparable autofocus alternatives
−Substantial weight (700g+) and size relative to modern autofocus 35mm lenses

About This LensThe Zeiss Otus ML 35mm f/1.4 is the company's first-ever 35mm lens in the Otus family, available in Sony E, Canon RF, and Nikon Z mounts for full-frame mirrorless cameras. It delivers excellent image quality, exceptional build quality, a pleasant manual focusing experience, and distinctive, character-filled image quality. The bokeh is luscious with smooth transitions and smooth backgrounds, with clear evidence of careful design effort. However, the lens suffers from severe longitudinal chromatic aberration like other Zeiss Otus lenses, causing visible pink and cyan color fringing at wider apertures that only disappears around f/4. | |
