Canon EOS R10

The Canon EOS R10 is a compact mirrorless camera from 2022 built around an APS-C sensor and the RF mount. At 426 g and 123 x 88 x 83 mm, it suits photographers who want a light body for travel, family and everyday shooting.

A 24MP sensor and 15fps maximum burst suit people, pets and sports, while autofocus offers 651 points for placement. Video reaches 4K, with a separate 120fps maximum.

Owning it is fairly simple: one SD card, a battery rated at 450 shots and convenient USB charging. There is no weather sealing and no in-body stabilisation, so lens choice and care in bad weather matter more.

An APS-C CMOS sensor paired with the Digic X processor gives the R10 plenty of resolution and comfortable cropping room. That suits wildlife and action shooters who often frame loosely and tighten later.

The shooting speed is the headline: a maximum burst rate of 15 frames per second, though that figure is a ceiling rather than a sustained-speed promise. A 1/4000s maximum shutter speed is workable for most daylight work, though it may limit wide apertures in bright light.

Autofocus offers 651 points, a large number, though the count alone does not tell you their spread across the frame, tracking accuracy or speed. Sensitivity runs from ISO 100 to 32000, a range that permits settings from bright outdoor to dim indoor light.

There is no in-body stabilisation, so sharp handheld results at slow shutter speeds depend on steady technique, a stabilised lens or a support. Framing is through a 2,360,000-dot electronic viewfinder.

The R10 records 4K video, a resolution that leaves room for cropping footage in post. Files are recorded in MPEG-4 or MOV.

Frame rates reach 120 fps for slow-motion playback. The 4K resolution and 120 fps rate are separate maximums, giving different options for detail and motion work. Use the higher rate when stretched timing helps reveal quick movement.

A built-in timelapse function simplifies creating passage-of-time sequences without an intervalometer or extra setup. That is handy for clouds, sunsets and construction-style projects.

The flip-out touchscreen supports composition from varied angles on video days, while the electronic viewfinder provides an eye-level framing option. That choice helps when switching between eye-level clips and compositions from other angles.

Handling centres on a 3-inch TFT touchscreen with just over a million dots. Touch input gives another way to operate the camera, and the flipping screen supports shooting from varied angles.

A built-in flash is available for quick fill light, and an external flash can be added when more power or control is wanted. That combination covers casual indoor shooting and more considered lighting setups.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both built in, giving the camera wireless connectivity alongside its other handling features.

Two absences to plan around: no GPS for automatic location data, and no weather sealing, so dust and rain protection depends on handling and any covers you add rather than the body itself.

Storage runs on a single SD, SDHC or SDXC card slot with UHS-I compatibility, so faster cards are supported. With only one slot there is no second card for in-camera backup, so important shoots deserve careful card handling and timely downloads.

The LP-E17 battery is rated at 450 shots per charge, a figure that is not a promise of real-world endurance. Heavy use of the screen, Wi-Fi or continuous shooting can drain it faster, so a spare battery is a sensible addition for long days.

USB charging makes it simple to top the battery up between sessions, which is useful during travel. Carry a charged spare when you expect to shoot throughout the day.
