Canon EOS R100

The Canon EOS R100 is a mirrorless camera released in 2023. It measures 116 x 86 x 69mm and weighs 356g, so it slips into a small bag and stays comfortable on long walks.

Inside sits an APS-C sensor on the RF mount, a combination that suits everyday photos, travel and family documentation, with 4K video available when you want motion as well as stills.

Handling stays simple. The screen flips for awkward angles, the electronic viewfinder gives a clear preview, and Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth handle wireless links. Some conveniences are absent, so it suits photographers who value light, straightforward gear over a long feature list.

The 24MP APS-C sensor resolves plenty of detail for prints and generous cropping, and the ISO range runs from 100 to 12800, giving you room to keep shooting as the light fades.

Autofocus draws on 3975 points. That count alone says nothing about speed, accuracy or tracking, so treat it as a scale figure rather than a performance verdict.

Continuous shooting tops out at 6.5 fps, a maximum rather than a sustained promise. That covers portraits, gatherings and gentle movement, while fast sports will test your timing. The 1/4000s shutter ceiling and ISO 100 minimum also limit how wide an aperture you can use in strong sunlight.

There is no in-body stabilisation, so sharp handheld work depends on shutter technique or a stabilised lens. The 2.36-million-dot electronic viewfinder at least shows exposure and focus clearly before you commit.

The EOS R100 records video up to 4K, its maximum resolution, which is enough for online sharing and HD delivery with room to crop or reframe.

Frame rates reach 100 fps, so fast movement can be shown as smooth slow motion. Resolution and frame rate are separate maximums, so check the modes you actually need before planning a shoot.

A built-in timelapse function automates interval shooting, handy for compressing clouds, traffic or a sunset into a short clip without extra gear or manual timing.

The flipping screen helps you compose video at waist level or from low angles without lying on the ground. Clips record as H.264 in MPEG-4 or MOV.

The 3-inch LCD carries 1.04 million dots, sharp enough for judging focus in playback, and it flips out for overhead or waist-level shots. There is no touch input, so settings change through the physical controls.

A built-in flash supplies a quick lift for indoor snapshots, and the camera also accepts an external flash when you want more power.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth provide wireless connections, and live view lets you compose at arm's length instead of only through the electronic viewfinder.

Neither weather sealing nor GPS is fitted. Shelter the body in rain and dust, and add location data another way if you want it on your files.

Cards go into one SD, SDHC or SDXC slot. There is no second slot, so your files live on a single card until you copy them, which makes a dependable card and regular offloading matter.

The LP-E17 battery is rated at 370 shots, a figure without a stated test standard. Treat it as a guide rather than a promise, since actual endurance depends on how you use the camera.

USB charging is not supported, so you cannot refill the battery through a cable while it sits in the camera. Keeping a second LP-E17 means a swap is ready when the first runs flat.
