Canon EOS Rebel T7 / 2000D

The EOS Rebel T7, also sold as the EOS 2000D, is a Canon DSLR from 2018. It pairs a 24.1 megapixel APS-C sensor with the Canon EF-S mount, making it a straightforward starting point for learning photography.

At 660 g and 129 x 101 x 78 mm, the body is compact and easy to carry, slipping into a small bag.

Shooting feels traditional. You frame through an optical pentamirror viewfinder, and a built-in flash is on hand when rooms get dim.

The APS-C sensor resolves plenty of detail for generous cropping, and the ISO 100 base sensitivity suits daylight shooting. The megapixel count and sensor format earn solid points, while the slow burst and ISO ceiling hold the score back.

Speed shows the limits. Autofocus uses nine points, and the maximum burst rate is 3 fps, so the camera leans toward static subjects: portraits, landscapes and still life rather than fast action.

There is no in-body stabilisation, so handheld sharpness depends on your technique and shutter speed. With sensitivity topping out at ISO 6400, the dimmest scenes may call for a tripod or the built-in flash rather than a long handheld exposure.

The maximum shutter speed is 1/4000 second, a ceiling that can limit wide apertures in bright conditions.

Video is a secondary feature here. The maximum recording resolution is Full HD, and the maximum frame rate is 30 fps. Those are separate limits, so the camera rules out both 4K detail and the high frame rates that slow motion requires.

Recordings save as MOV files, and live view lets you compose shots on the screen rather than guessing the frame.

The modest Video score of 43 reflects the Full HD resolution ceiling, the 30 fps maximum frame rate and the absence of a built-in timelapse mode. Interval shooting therefore needs planning away from the camera. For occasional clips alongside stills this setup is workable, but video-led projects will find it narrow.

Composition happens through a 3-inch LCD with 920,000 dots or the optical viewfinder. The screen flips out from the body, which helps with waist-level and overhead shots, but there is no touch input, so every setting change goes through the buttons.

For wireless connections the camera offers Wi-Fi but no Bluetooth. There is no GPS either, so location tagging is not built in.

The lighting options are useful. The built-in flash covers casual indoor shots, and the camera accepts an external flash when you want stronger, more controllable light.

The Features score of 41 is modest, and one omission matters outdoors: there is no weather sealing, so keep the camera under cover in rain or dust.

The LP-E10 battery is rated for 500 shots per charge. That figure is a rating rather than a promise of real-world endurance, so heavy users should keep a charged spare in the bag.

Recharging needs the external charger, since the camera does not charge over USB, so plan for mains power access between shooting sessions.

A single card slot means no in-camera backup. SD, SDHC and SDXC cards are all supported, so large-capacity cards work, but carry spares for important shoots.

These compromises add up to a limited Storage & Battery score of 27, so plan for a second battery and spare cards.
