Fujifilm X-T3

The Fujifilm X-T3 is a mirrorless camera from 2018, built around the Fujifilm X lens mount. Measuring 133 x 93 x 59 mm and weighing 539 g, it stays comfortable on long walks and packs into a small bag.

It suits photographers who want an interchangeable-lens system in a compact body. The APS-C sensor keeps the camera relatively small, while 26 megapixels leave room for crops and large prints.

Day-to-day shooting involves an electronic viewfinder with 3.69 million dots, a flipping touchscreen and a weather-sealed body, so it works for both deliberate composition and handheld use outdoors.

The 1/8000 second top shutter speed is useful in bright light with wide apertures, and the ISO range of 160 to 12800 covers shaded conditions through dim interiors.

There is no in-body stabilisation, so sharp results at slower shutter speeds depend on a stabilised lens, steady technique or a support. The electronic viewfinder, with 3.69 million dots, gives a detailed preview of exposure and focus before you press the shutter.

The X-T3 records 4K video, which gives footage plenty of resolution for editing and for cropping in post. The fastest frame rate on offer is 60 fps, useful for smooth motion in ordinary playback.

A built-in timelapse function lets you create moving sequences from still frames without extra interval equipment. The flipping screen makes it easier to film from low or awkward angles, and the touchscreen speeds up setting changes.

Recording uses MPEG-4 or MOV file formats. Both are offered on this camera, so you can record clips in either format depending on how you prefer to handle your files.

Since there is no in-body stabilisation, steady footage depends on a stabilised lens, a tripod or a gimbal when the shot needs it.

The 3-inch TFT LCD offers 1.04 million dots for a clear view of playback and menus, and its touch response makes settings quick to change. The screen also flips, which helps when shooting overhead, at waist level or from a tripod.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both built in, so the camera carries two kinds of wireless connection. Live view is available for composing on the screen instead of the viewfinder when the camera is at an angle.

The body is weather sealed, which offers some protection against dust and moisture in changeable conditions, though it is not waterproof. There is no built-in flash, but an external flash can be mounted, and there is no GPS, so location data is not recorded automatically.

Two card slots accept SD, SDHC and SDXC media, giving you flexible storage. A second slot leaves room for carrying an extra card on a long shoot, or for keeping different shoots on separate cards.

The NP-W126S battery carries a rating of 390 shots. A rating like this gives a point of comparison rather than a guarantee for every outing, so a spare battery is sensible for longer trips.

USB charging is supported, so the battery can be topped up over a USB connection between shoots. That gives a second way to keep the camera powered alongside simply swapping in a freshly charged battery.
