Hasselblad H6D-100C

The Hasselblad H6D-100C is a 2016 medium format camera built around a 100 megapixel sensor and the Hasselblad H lens system. It suits photographers who work deliberately: studio product and portrait shoots, landscapes and any subject where detail matters more than speed.

Owning it is a commitment to size and weight. It weighs about 1.6 kilograms and measures 153 x 131 x 122mm, so it rewards tripod and studio use over casual handheld walking. Weather sealing helps when you do take it outside.

The 100 megapixel CMOS sensor is the reason this camera exists. That resolution on a medium format sensor produces files with enough detail for very large prints and real room to crop after the fact.

The pace is deliberate. At 1.5 frames per second, this suits portraits, product work and landscapes rather than anything that moves quickly. The 1/2000s maximum shutter speed also means wide apertures in bright light may need an ND filter to avoid overexposure.

There is no in-body stabilisation, so sharp results at slower shutter speeds depend on steady technique or solid support. Sensitivity runs from a base of ISO 64 up to 12800.

The electronic viewfinder and live view provide two framing options for deliberate composition. The 920,000-dot viewfinder gives an eye-level view, while live view moves framing to the rear screen.

Video reaches 4K resolution, giving footage detail and room to crop in the edit. Frame-rate support includes 30fps for standard-motion recording.

Footage records in Hasselblad RAW or H.264. The choice between a RAW workflow and H.264 depends on your editing and storage needs, so plan cards and drive space before a session, especially for longer shoots.

The three-inch touchscreen provides live view for screen-based video framing. Its 920,000-dot display also gives you a rear-screen view for checking clips between takes.

With a body this large and heavy, video suits considered, locked-off setups such as interviews and product reveals rather than handheld run-and-gun shooting.

Because the slots take different card types, plan which format serves which job rather than expecting a matched pair, and carry both types if you want to use both slots on a shoot.

The rechargeable Li-ion battery is rated at 420 shots per charge. Carry a charged spare for full days of shooting.

There is no USB charging. Charge the battery between sessions and start each shoot with a full battery and a spare when practical.
