Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III

The Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III is a mirrorless camera from 2020 built around the Micro Four Thirds system. The body measures 134 x 91 x 69 mm and weighs 580 g, and the Micro 4/3 mount accepts the system's lenses.

Burst shooting reaches up to 60 fps and in-body stabilisation steadies handheld frames, suiting photographers who follow moving subjects or travel light. Framing is via an electronic viewfinder.

It also records 4K video and carries weather sealing, so it can serve as a single body for stills and movies in changeable outdoor conditions.

At the heart of the camera is a 20 megapixel Micro Four Thirds CMOS sensor paired with the TruePic IX processor. This combination keeps files a manageable size while providing enough resolution for prints and crops, and the ISO range runs from 200 up to 25600 for dim interiors and evening work.

Burst shooting reaches up to 60 fps, fast enough to catch peak moments in sports or wildlife, though that figure is a maximum rate rather than a promise of sustained speed. The 1/8000s top shutter speed helps freeze fast action and supports wide apertures in bright light.

Autofocus uses 121 points. In-body stabilisation reduces camera shake when shooting handheld or at slower shutter speeds, which helps indoors and at long focal lengths. It does not stop subject movement, so fast action still needs a quick shutter.

Framing comes through a 2,360,000-dot electronic viewfinder, detailed enough for checking focus and composition before capture. The Micro 4/3 mount accepts matching Micro Four Thirds lenses.

The camera records video at up to 4K resolution, with a maximum frame rate of 60 fps. The two are separate maximum figures rather than a guaranteed combined recording mode.

4K output is enough for most projects today, including footage destined for online viewing or mixing with other 4K material. The higher frame-rate options also give you material that plays back smoothly and can be edited for slow-motion effects.

Recordings are saved as MPEG-4 or MOV files. The flip-out touchscreen also helps during filming, since you can tilt the display to hold the camera low or high while keeping the framing visible.

There is also a built-in intervalometer for timelapse, so you can shoot sequences of a sunset or a busy street without carrying an external timer.

Handling centres on the 3-inch TFT LCD, which pairs touch control with 1,037,000 dots for a sharp, detailed view. The screen resolution is ample for confirming focus while shooting, and touch input lets you adjust settings by tapping rather than working through menus.

The display flips out, so waist-level, overhead and low-angle framing all stay comfortable. Live view is available for composing on the screen rather than through the viewfinder.

Weather sealing protects the body against dust and moisture in poor conditions, though it is not a waterproof rating, so care is still needed in heavy rain. There is no built-in flash, but an external flash can be fitted when you need extra light.

Both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are built in for wireless connection. GPS is not built in, so the camera does not record location data itself and tagging would rely on external methods.

The camera takes two memory cards in dual slots, supporting SD, SDHC and SDXC media. One slot is UHS-II compatible, so it accepts the faster cards in that range. Two cards simply give you more storage to work with on a long shoot.

Power comes from the BLH-1 battery, rated at 420 shots per charge. Actual endurance will vary with settings and usage, so a spare battery is sensible for longer shoots.

The battery can also be charged over USB, which simplifies ownership: you can top it up from a laptop or a charger with the right output rather than always carrying a dedicated mains charger. That makes it easier to keep the camera ready between shoots.
