General

About This Lens

The Sirui Sniper 16mm f/1.2 is a bright wide-angle prime for APS-C cameras. Sirui launched it in 2024 and still makes it. It comes in Sony E, Fujifilm X and Nikon Z mounts, so choose the version made for your system. All three mount versions share the same optical design.

The f/1.2 aperture is the main draw. It suits night streets, dim interiors and the night sky, where ordinary wide zooms force higher ISO settings or a tripod. The trade-off is a fixed focal length with no zoom and no stabilization, so you frame by moving and hold the camera steady.

About the Build

The lens weighs 14.2 oz (403 g) and measures 2.76 in (70 mm) across and 3.7 in (94 mm) long. It stays manageable on a compact APS-C body. Screw-in filters fit directly, and they must match the 58mm thread. That is a common filter size.

About the Optics

On APS-C, 16mm gives a wide view of small spaces. That suits tight interiors, architecture, street corners and groups in close quarters. Working near a foreground subject stretches perspective, giving wide images depth.

The f/1.2 aperture admits far more light than a typical wide zoom. You can shoot indoors or on night streets without pushing ISO far, and handheld shutter speeds stay usable after dark. A bright wide prime also gathers light quickly for starry-sky frames.

Depth of field is the flip side. Even wide open, 16mm keeps much of a scene sharp, so expect environmental framing rather than isolated subjects. Focus reaches 1 ft (30 cm), which lets you set a foreground detail close and stretch it against the wide view.

Thirteen aperture blades help the opening stay round when stopped down, which keeps out-of-focus highlights even at night. Our specification score for optics is 90 out of 100.

Features

About the Features

There is no stabilization built in. At 16mm you can use fairly slow handheld shutter speeds. The f/1.2 aperture buys extra speed in poor light, so shake matters less than on a telephoto. For handheld video or long night exposures, steady technique still counts. Bracing against a wall helps for static night scenes.

The lens has no weather sealing, so keep it sheltered from rain, spray and dust while shooting outdoors. A cover or a dry pocket saves worry in changeable weather.

The front glass carries no fluorine coating. Fingerprints and rain spots cling instead of beading away, so clean it gently. A clear 58mm filter adds simple protection for the front element.

Construction

About the Construction

Fourteen elements in five groups include two aspherical surfaces and three low-dispersion elements. Aspherical shaping helps correct distortion, the bending of straight lines that wide angles can cause. That matters when you photograph interiors or buildings. Low-dispersion glass helps reduce chromatic aberration, the colored fringes that can appear along high-contrast edges such as night lights. Focusing moves internal elements, so the barrel does not extend.
