General

About This Lens

This Laowa prime pairs a 200mm focal length with an f/2 maximum aperture for full-frame cameras. The combination suits indoor sport, stage performers and outdoor portraits when you have room to stand back. It also suits distant wildlife.

Laowa introduced it in 2025. Separate versions fit Canon EF, Nikon Z and Sony E cameras. Choose the mount that matches your camera. The main trade-offs are weight and a fixed focal length: this is a prime lens, so it cannot zoom.

Plan how you will carry and support the full camera setup during long sessions. A wider lens helps with large nearby subjects and broad scenes.

About the Build

The Canon EF version weighs 3 lb 8 oz (1588 g) and measures 5.83 in (148 mm) long and 4.65 in (118 mm) across. Other mount versions differ in weight and length. A monopod or rest can take the weight during long waits.

Screw-in filters must match the 105mm front thread to attach directly.

About the Optics

At 200mm, a distant performer or player appears larger than with a shorter lens from the same position. How much of the frame the subject fills still depends on distance. If you cannot move, a different lens or a later crop can change the framing.

The f/2 maximum aperture gives more room for a faster shutter speed or lower ISO than a smaller opening. Under stage lights, that can help with moving performers. It does not guarantee a sharp result: available light and the speed of the movement still determine the settings needed.

At close portrait distances, f/2 can give a thin zone of sharp focus. A background far behind a person can become soft. Focus on the eye that matters most, then stop down when more of the face or another person must stay sharp.

Closest focus is 4.9 ft (150 cm), measured from the sensor. Anything nearer is too close to focus. Maximum magnification reaches 0.15x, so very small details stay modest in the frame. The focusing limit does not determine a suitable approach distance for wildlife. Leave animals enough space.

Features

About the Features

Dust and moisture resistance help outdoors. Use cover in persistent rain. Keep the camera connection clean and dry when changing lenses, especially beside a dusty track or near sand.

There is no stabilization in the lens. A camera with body stabilization can reduce shake for still scenes. Firm support helps with slow exposures and controlled video work. A moving performer still needs enough shutter speed for their movement, regardless of camera stabilization.

Construction

About the Construction

Two low-dispersion elements help reduce coloured fringes along high-contrast edges, such as a spotlit performer against a dark stage. Their presence explains part of the optical design, but does not by itself establish measured image quality.

Internal focusing keeps barrel length unchanged while focus moves. This describes the focusing mechanism; it does not establish focusing speed or tracking accuracy.
