General

About This Lens

This Sigma superzoom covers 16–300mm on APS-C mirrorless cameras. It suits travelers and hobbyists who want one lens for city streets, wide landscapes and distant wildlife. Separate versions fit Leica L, Canon RF, Sony E and Fujifilm X bodies, so you buy the one matching your camera.

Sigma introduced it in 2025. Its main trade-off is a maximum aperture that narrows as you zoom. Dim scenes and fast action can require a higher ISO to maintain enough shutter speed, particularly at the long end.

The broad range can reduce the number of lenses you carry and the time spent changing them. That helps when a day moves between scenery, people and distant details. The range does not remove the need to choose your viewpoint carefully.

About the Build

The L-Mount version weighs 1 lb 5.7 oz (615 g) and measures 4.78 in (121.4 mm) long and 2.91 in (73.8 mm) across. Weight and length can differ on other mounts. All versions use a 67mm front thread, so screw-in filters must match that size.

Optics

About the Optics

On APS-C, 16mm gives a wide view for interiors and landscapes. At 300mm, a distant subject becomes much larger from the same position. The narrower long-end view also makes a moving subject harder to find. Start at a shorter setting when you need to locate action quickly.

The maximum aperture changes from f/3.5 to f/6.7 across the zoom. In low light, you may need a higher ISO or slower shutter speed. Long settings can still soften a distant background behind a nearby subject. More space between the subject and background makes that separation easier.

Closest focus is 0.6 ft (17 cm) at 16mm, measured from the sensor. The minimum distance increases toward full reach. Maximum magnification is 0.5x at 70mm, a different setting. At this magnification, small details can fill a useful part of the frame. Leave room ahead of the glass and watch for shadows.

Features

81/100
About the Features

Optical stabilization reduces camera shake during handheld use. It helps with still scenes when a slower shutter speed is useful. At 300mm, small hand movements have a greater effect on the image. A moving bird or child still needs enough shutter speed for their movement.

Dust and splash resistance help outdoors. Use cover in persistent rain. The water- and oil-repellent front coating makes spots and fingerprints easier to clean. Remove loose grit before using a cloth.

The zoom lock holds the barrel at 16mm for carrying. It helps prevent the barrel extending under its own weight. Release it before changing focal length.

About the Construction

Four aspherical elements help correct distortion and spherical aberration, which can bend straight lines or soften detail. This is useful when architecture fills a wide view.

One FLD and four SLD elements help reduce coloured fringes along high-contrast edges. A dark bird against a bright sky is one place those fringes can show.
