General

About This Lens

TTArtisan built this prime as a compact everyday lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras. It comes in Sony E, Nikon Z and Leica L versions, and each version fits only its own system, so choose the mount you shoot. Released in 2025, it gives a near-standard 40mm view for street photography, casual portraits and interiors.

Its appeal is a compact body and one fixed focal length. It suits photographers who want a simple lens for everyday people and places. The trade-off is a limited feature set: it has no built-in stabilisation or weather sealing. Consider the conditions you usually work in before choosing it.

About the Build

The metal body surrounds a compact optical design. Its weight varies with the mount version, so check the version for your camera when planning what to carry. Screw-in filters fit a 52mm thread. A polariser or ND filter made for that size attaches directly.

About the Optics

On full frame, 40mm gives a view between a wide-angle and a standard lens. It suits street scenes, interiors and portraits that include some surroundings. Exact framing depends on subject distance. Move back to include more of a room, or closer to make one person more prominent.

The f/2 maximum aperture is wide for a lens this size. In dim cafés, evening streets or rooms lit by window light, the wide opening lets in more light than a smaller aperture would. The same opening can also help soften a background when you photograph a person at close range.

Closest focus is 1.3 ft (40 cm), measured from the sensor. That allows nearby subjects such as food, plants or objects on a desk. Leave room ahead of the glass and check that the camera does not shade the subject.

With one focal length, you change viewpoint to adjust framing. Moving also changes perspective, so inspect the relationship between your subject and the background. A small sideways move can remove a distracting edge behind a face.

Features

About the Features

There is no image stabilisation in the lens. A camera with body stabilisation can help reduce shake for still scenes. Firm support helps with longer exposures. Moving people need enough shutter speed for their movement as well as your own.

There is no weather sealing. Use cover in rain and keep the lens away from blowing dust or sea spray. Keep both ends capped when it is stored.

A clicked aperture ring gives a physical control for the opening. You can return to a marked setting as the light changes. Opening the aperture gives more room for a faster shutter speed or lower ISO; stopping down increases depth of field.

Construction

About the Construction

The optical formula uses nine elements in six groups, with aspherical and low-dispersion glass. Aspherical surfaces help correct faults such as distortion, which can curve straight doorframes and window lines. Low-dispersion glass helps reduce chromatic aberration, the coloured fringes that can appear along high-contrast edges such as branches against bright sky.
