General

About This Lens

This prime pairs a 35mm focal length with an F1.2 maximum aperture for full-frame cameras. Viltrox sells separate Sony E and Nikon Z versions, so order the one matching your body. That combination targets photographers who shoot people in dim venues, at evening events, or on busy streets.

As a prime, it trades zoom flexibility for that wide aperture. You frame by moving yourself rather than turning a zoom ring.

The main trade-off is weight. The Sony E version is a heavy prime at 2 lb 0.1 oz (910 g). Viltrox introduced the design in 2025. Its size makes most sense when you often need a wide aperture and are willing to carry it through a long session.

About the Build

The Sony E version measures 4.8 in (121.8 mm) long and 3.51 in (89.2 mm) across. That bulk leaves room for the large aperture and optical design. The Nikon Z version differs in weight and length. Both versions accept a screw-in filter matching the 77mm front thread.

About the Optics

On a full-frame body, 35mm frames a person with their surroundings rather than isolating the face. That suits environmental portraits, wedding guests at their tables, and street scenes where context carries the story.

The f/1.2 maximum aperture gives you more room for a faster shutter speed or lower ISO than a smaller opening. In an evening street, choose between those options according to the light and the subject. A nearby person can stand out against a background placed well behind them.

That shallow zone demands care. Wide open and near the subject, the sharp band is thin, so place focus deliberately, on the near eye for a portrait. Stopping down a little buys depth when the scene needs it.

Closest focus is 1.1 ft (34 cm), measured from the sensor. That suits plates of food and tabletop details, with maximum magnification of 0.17x. The front glass is closer than the sensor, so leave space and avoid shading the subject. At these distances, a smaller aperture can keep more of an object clear.

About the Features

Weather sealing helps resist dust and moisture during outdoor portrait and street sessions. Use cover in persistent rain and change lenses under shelter. Sealing is useful for location work, where the camera may move between indoor and outdoor settings several times during a shoot.

There is no built-in stabilization. A camera with body stabilization can help reduce camera shake with still subjects. A firm hold or support offers another option. For people who move, choose enough shutter speed for their movement. The wide aperture gives you more room to make that choice as light falls.

Construction

69/100
About the Construction

The formula uses 15 elements in 10 groups. Two aspherical elements help correct distortion and spherical aberration, which can bend straight edges or soften detail. Five low-dispersion elements help reduce coloured fringes along high-contrast edges, such as a window against bright sky. Internal focusing keeps the barrel length fixed as focus changes.
